Wolf has been regarded as a composer who followed the style and aesthetics of Wagnerian music drama without question, while writing in a genre often seen as less challenging than the symphony or opera. This 1999 book re-examines the evidence concerning Wolf's responses to Wagner and Wagnerism and suggests ways in which he voiced his criticism through song, and his one completed opera Der Corregidor. This opens up insights into the kind of impact Wagner had on those following in his wake, and into the complexity and subtlety of the late nineteenth-century Lied. From this perspective, Wolf emerges as a persuasive and articulate figure of wide musical and artistic significance.

Excerpt from Hugo Wolf Lthough Hugo Wolf has been dead only some four years, there already exists sufficient bio graphical and epistolary material to give a full-size picture of him. There are details, of course, that can only be filled in later on; his letters, for example, have had to be given to the world shom of some of their pungent allusions to his contemporaries. We shall have to wait until a few people who are now living have been accommodating enough to die, before we can have the letters in their absolutely complete form. On other points fresh data will no doubt be forthcoming from time to time. But there are already plenty to work upon. First in importance is the biography by Dr. Ernst Decsey in four volumes, which may be taken as the official life. Besides the published letters, Dr. Decsey has had access to a number of unpublished ones, and has further bene fited by the verbal communications of many of the personal friends of Wolf. His volumes, therefore, contain a mass of information not to be found elsewhere, particu larly about the earlier part of Wolf's career. His quota tions from the articles written by Wolf as musical critic. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. With a foreword by the legendary accompanist, Gerald Moore, Eric Sams' study (Faber 1961, revised 1983) is a notable landmark in the establishment of Wolf as one of the supreme masters of German song. Comprehensively revised and enlarged in 1983, the main subject matter remains the 242 published songs that Wolf wrote for voice and piano, though the Ibsen songs for voice and orchestra are also discussed. English translations are provided and the backgrounds to the original poems by Morike, Eichendorff and Goethe, as well as the Italian and Spanish sources from which the songbooks were drawn, are fully explored. Each song is dated, its keys identified and vocal range determined. 'This is the most important book in the English language on the songs of Hugo Wolf since Ernest Newman proclaimed the composer's genius in 1907 . . . To the English-speaking student this work is a treasure to which he will find himself returning again and again: it is indispensable to those of us anxious to gain a deeper knowledge of Wolf.' Gerald Moore

A groundbreaking look at one of the great song composers of the late Romantic period In the virtual cottage industry of works on fin de siècle Vienna, Hugo Wolf (1860–1903) has been somewhat neglected, perhaps because he was the master of a small genre—the late Romantic lied—and never truly made his mark in the larger forms that command greater public attention. But in the realm of song, he is among the greatest inheritors of Schubert and Schumann, one who was both a traditionalist and a modernist. When the Viennese critic Eduard Hanslick disapprovingly dubbed Wolf “the Richard Wagner of the lied,” he was paying oblique homage to Wolf’s genius as a song composer in the most modern manner. In this book, Susan Youens examines five aspects of Wolf’s compositional art, each exemplifying a different synthesis of traditionalism and modernity and spanning his entire, tragically brief creative life, from his first efforts to his lapse into insanity in 1897. She discusses Wolf’s youthful imitations of Schumann, his genius for comic songs of a kind unlike any of his predecessors, his part in the ballad revival of the late nineteenth century, Wolf in relation to his contemporaries, and his pursuit of operatic fame. Youens looks as closely at the poetic texts as she does the music and includes numerous previously unpublished sketches and fragments, examples from songs now long out of print and difficult to obtain, and citations from Wolf’s vivid letters and other sources of the period.

From the introductory. "Mr. Ernest Newman's elaborate monograph on Hugo Wolf is divided into two parts, the first dealing with his life, and the second with his works. The former makes of necessity very painful reading. Hugo Wolf, who was the son of an unsuccessful Styrian leather-merchant, was denied the qualities which make either for success or content. His school life was unhappy, he was dismissed from the Vienna Conservatoire for insubordination, and his temperament rendered it absolutely impossible for him to make a livelihood by teaching, hack-work, or musical criticism.... Mr. Newman's elaborate analysis of the songs, operas, and other compositions of Hugo Wolf is based on an intimate acquaintance with the scores which is only possible in a thoroughly accomplished musician. "From his estimate of Wolf as the foremost song-writer of all time it is possible to dissent energetically; but there is no gainsaying the ability and enthusiasm with which he supports his claim. He is an uncompromising but a convinced partisan. -- The Spectator. "Mr. Newman is one of the most ardent of Wolf's admirers and his book is by far the most comprehensive biography of the man and study of his art that has appeared in English. It is also the ablest and best, although it must be recognized that Mr. Newman's position is to a considerable degree that of a special pleader." -- The N. Y. Times.

Music Criticism in Vienna records a culture in which musical criticism had achieved the status of a minor art form. The period covered - October 1896 to December 1897 - was an eventful time in Vienna. Bruckner died, then Brahms; Mahler arrived; premieres of works by Czech composers coincidedwith increasing tension in the Empire between Czechs and Germans; Puccini's La Boheme reached Vienna on its sensational progress around the world; and the great programme music debate continued. These events and issues were recorded and debated by some two dozen critics ranging from Eduard Hanslick, widely credited with (and blamed for) raising music criticism to an art, to Heinrich Schenker. The focus of Sandra McColl's monograph is unashamedly on the critics themselves, and her reconstruction of the climate of debate about whatever music or musicians came to their notice. She illuminates theintellectual climate in which the music was created, performed and received, and provides a foundation for the study of musical criticism in the post-Hanslick generation.
