Excerpt from Hugo Wolf Lthough Hugo Wolf has been dead only some four years, there already exists sufficient bio graphical and epistolary material to give a full-size picture of him. There are details, of course, that can only be filled in later on; his letters, for example, have had to be given to the world shom of some of their pungent allusions to his contemporaries. We shall have to wait until a few people who are now living have been accommodating enough to die, before we can have the letters in their absolutely complete form. On other points fresh data will no doubt be forthcoming from time to time. But there are already plenty to work upon. First in importance is the biography by Dr. Ernst Decsey in four volumes, which may be taken as the official life. Besides the published letters, Dr. Decsey has had access to a number of unpublished ones, and has further bene fited by the verbal communications of many of the personal friends of Wolf. His volumes, therefore, contain a mass of information not to be found elsewhere, particu larly about the earlier part of Wolf's career. But in the realm of song, he is among the greatest inheritors of Schubert and Schumann, one who was both a traditionalist and a modernist. When the Viennese critic Eduard Hanslick disapprovingly dubbed Wolf “the Richard Wagner of the lied,” he was paying oblique homage to Wolf’s genius as a song composer in the most modern manner. The period covered - October 1896 to December 1897 - was an eventful time in Vienna.
