Jules Verne's The Mysterious Island (1874) charts the adventure of a group of castaways on an uncharted South Pacific island. It's both a shipwreck adventure and a mystery. Contemporary readers would have found the greatest similarities between Verne's Mysterious Island and DeFoe's Robinson Crusoe (1719), the quintessential castaway story. But today, The Mysterious Island will resonate with anyone familiar with the television show Lost. While Lost spoilers are unforgivable, divulging the secrets of The Mysterious Island is pardonable since the novel is nearly 150 years old. Given the number of mysteries that arise during the course of the novel, only one spoiler is really necessary to explain the novel: it's a sequel to Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1870). The first 3⁄4 of the novel combine the castaways' efforts to colonize the island and a series of unexplainable occurrences that help them along their way. The great Captain Nemo finally shows up in the last 50 pages, and his appearance explains the supernatural events.

The Mysterious Island (French: L'Île mystérieuse) is a novel by Jules Verne, published in 1875. The original edition, published by Hetzel, contains a number of illustrations by Jules Férat. The novel is a crossover sequel to Verne's famous Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas (1870) and In Search of the Castaways (1867-68), though its themes are vastly different from those books. An early draft of the novel, initially rejected by Verne's publisher and wholly reconceived before publication, was titled Shipwrecked Family: Marooned with Uncle Robinson, seen as indicating the influence of the novels Robinson Crusoe and The Swiss Family Robinson. Verne developed a similar theme in his later novel, Godfrey Morgan (French: L'École des Robinsons, 1882).

The Mysterious Island follows the adventures of a group of castaways who use their survivalist savvy to build a functional community on an uncharted island. A hot-air balloon carrying five passengers and a dog escapes from Richmond, Va., during the American Civil War. It is blown off course and deposited near an obscure island. One of the castaways nearly dies after a skirmish with pirates; he is saved by the unexplained appearance of medicine after the pirates are unexpectedly routed. The group later discovers that their secret helper is the reclusive Captain Nemo (first introduced in Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea), who dies and is buried at sea in his submarine. The castaways are eventually saved by a passing ship.

At the age of twenty-four, Apsley Cherry-Garrard was one of the youngest members of the Terra Nova expedition. This was Robert F. Scott’s second attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. Cherry’s application to join the expedition was initially rejected as Scott was looking for scientists, but he made a second application along with a promise of £1,000 (equivalent to £103,000 in 2019) towards the cost of the expedition. Rejected a second time, he made the donation regardless. Struck by this gesture, and at the same time persuaded by E.A.Wilson, Scott agreed to take Cherry-Garrard as assistant zoologist. The expedition arrived in the Antarctic on 4 January 1911.Scott and four companions eventually attained the pole on 17 January 1912, where they found that a Norwegian expedition led by Roald Amundsen had preceded them by 34 days. Scott's entire party died on the return journey from the pole; some of their bodies, journals, and photographs were found by a search party eight months later. After returning to England, Cherry-Garrard travelled to China and then volunteered to the First World War and commanded a squadron of armoured cars in Flanders. Invalided out in 1916, he suffered from clinical depression as well as ulcerative colitis which had developed shortly after returning from Antarctica. Although his psychological condition was never cured, the explorer was able to treat himself to some extent by writing down his experiences. In 1922, encouraged by his friend George Bernard Shaw, Cherry-Garrard wrote The Worst Journey in the World, his memoir of the incredible 3 years he spent in Antarctica. Over 80 years later this book is still in print and is often cited as a classic of travel literature, having been acclaimed as the greatest true adventure story ever written.
