A Chief Inspector Pointer Mystery Farthing was one of the oldest and finest houses in England, and, as with many ancient houses it came with legends attached to this. A particularly gruesome one dated back to the time of Queen Mary when the then current owner of the house, denounced his own wife as a heretic in order to retain possession of the estate. Shortly after he met his own doom. Since that time, a sequence of three eerie laughs has presaged the death of the most recent owner. When Chief Inspector Pointer is approached to investigate when the laughs have sounded twice, he demurs, claiming pressing business, only to be called in when Edgar Danford, the latest owner is found murdered. The call reporting the death had been made by the victim's partner, a Mr. Digby Cox, but when the police arrived on the scene, Cox had vanished leaving Pointer to ponder just who Mr. Cox was and what part had he played in the death of Danford. It would seem that to solve the mystery of Edgar Danford's death, Pointer must first find the Mysterious Partner.

His wife, Carol Simmons Wall, is the new elected sheriff of nearby Solano County. They are living in paradise physically and mentally on a twenty-eight-acre ranch in the Stags Leap region of Napa County. All human relationships are containers of emotional life, but what are the structures underlying them? Nathan Schwartz-Salant looks at all kinds of relationships through an analyst's eye. By analogy with the ancient system of alchemy he shows how states of mind that can undermine our relationships - in marriage, in creative work, in the workplace - can become transformative when brought to consciousness. It is only by learning how to access the interactive field of our relationships that we can enter this transformative process and explore its mysterious potential for self-realization.

This instant New York Times bestselling “dynamic detective story” (The New York Times) reveals the hidden history Rudolf Diesel, one of the world’s greatest inventors, and his mysterious disappearance on the eve of World War I. September 29, 1913: the steamship Dresden is halfway between Belgium and England. On board is one of the most famous men in the world, Rudolf Diesel, whose new internal combustion engine is on the verge of revolutionizing global industry forever. But Diesel never arrives at his destination. He vanishes during the night and headlines around the world wonder if it was an accident, suicide, or murder. After rising from an impoverished European childhood, Diesel had become a multi-millionaire with his powerful engine that does not require expensive petroleum-based fuel. In doing so, he became not only an international celebrity but also the enemy of two extremely powerful men: Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and John D. Rockefeller, the founder of Standard Oil and the richest man in the world. The Kaiser wanted the engine to power a fleet of submarines that would finally allow him to challenge Great Britain’s Royal Navy. But Diesel had intended for his engine to be used for the betterment of the world. Now, New York Times bestselling author Douglas Brunt reopens the case and provides an “absolutely riveting” (Chris Bohjalian, #1 New York Times bestselling author) new conclusion about Diesel’s fate. Brunt’s book is “equal parts Walter Isaacson and Sherlock Holmes, [and] yanks back the curtain on the greatest caper of the 20th century in this riveting history” (Jay Winik, New York Times bestselling author).

It’s almost as if someone has set the scene in order to make the warning note meaningless—but why would anyone do that? Jane has no idea. The Mysterious Alexandra Tarasova-Yusupov is historical fiction about the glory years and the end of Tzarist Russia, and the time when Australia came into its own. It is a tale of swashbuckling heroes, ferocious pirates, and ruthless business tai-pans. The book chronicles the life of a woman who could outcompete them all, but could not conquer her own demons. Alexandra was at once lovable, beguiling, reasonable, and admirable, but also despicable, disenchanting, capricious, and—at times—deplorable. She was always mysterious.
