French Theatre Orientalism And The Representation Of India 1770 1865 written by David Hammerbeck and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-30 with Performing Arts categories.

This book examines the French theatricalization of India from 1770 to 1865 and how a range of plays not only represented India to the French viewing public but also staged issues within French culture including colonialism, imperialism, race, gender, and national politics. Through examining these texts and available performance history, and incorporating historical texts and cultural theory, David Hammerback analyses these works to illustrate a complex of cultural representations: some contested Orientalism, some participated in Western colonialist discourses, while some can be placed somewhere between these two markers of ideology in Western culture and the arts. He also assesses the works which participated in shaping the theatrical face of Western hegemony, ones directly participating in Orientalism as delineated by Edward Said and others. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars in theatre, French literature, history and cultural studies.

Who created the most famous Southeast Asian hero during the heyday of imperialism and colonialism? Who inaugurated with The Mysteries of the Black Jungle over a century long link uniting the Italian imaginary to the Indian one? Who envisioned the most celebrated interracial love stories of world literature, those between Sandokan, leader of the Tigers of Mompracem, and Marianna, the Pearl of Labuan, between Tremal-Naik, the Bengali snake catcher, and Ada, the Virgin of Kali’s temple at the time of the British Raj? Who defined the Caribbean as a symbolic trope of plunder and rebellion through the melancholic viewpoint of the Black Corsair and the forsaken love for his enemy’s daughter? Who created Yanez de Gomera, a most famous Portuguese hero, and the imperfect voice of white anti-colonialism? It was Italy’s great adventure novelist, Emilio Salgari (Verona, 1862 – Turin, 1911). From the Mahdi’s revolt in Sudan to the African slave trade, from the Philippine insurgency to the Mediterranean at war between Turks and Christians, and to ancient Egypt, Salgari’s breath-taking plots, together with his indigenous heroes and heroines in Vietnam, Thailand, Venezuela, Arctic Canada, the American Far West, the Chinese diaspora, deeply challenge canonical colonialist representations by contemporary Victorian authors like Conrad, Kipling, and Forster.

Republic Pictures Corporation, began as a motion picture laboratory in 1915. By 1935, Republic had become a studio and released its first movie, Westward Ho! starring a young John Wayne, who would stay with Republic for the next 17 years. Republic would go on to produce highly successful Westerns starring singing cowboys Gene Autry and Roy Rogers as well as serial adventure series. The studio cranked out so many exciting (not to mention money-making) serials that it became known as "The Thrill Factory." Occasionally, Republic would produce and distribute "A" features, such as Macbeth and The Quiet Man, but it was the "B" Westerns and adventure serials that they knew best how to produce and market. Until its demise in 1959, Republic fed hungry moviegoers with a steady diet of "B" Westerns, serials, dramas, series pictures and musicals. The Republic Pictures Checklist provides a full listing of Republic releases, with plot synopses, release dates, alternate titles, chapter titles and awards. All of Republic's output, including documentaries and training films, is included.

Now a major film on Netflix Edoardo Albinati’s The Catholic School creates a world: a world of power, sex, violence and the threat of masculinity, of the power wielded and misused by men. To be born male is an incurable disease. In his acclaimed and prize-winning The Catholic School, Edoardo Albinati creates a world: a world of power, sex, violence and the threat of masculinity, of the power wielded and misused by men. In Rome in 1975, three young men, former students of the prestigious boys’ school San Leone Magno, persuade two teenage girls to accompany them to the seaside resort of Circeo. Neo-fascist scions of wealthy families, the men proceed to rape and brutally torture the girls; one of them subsequently dies. The event, which comes to be known as the Circeo massacre, shocks and fascinates the country, exposing the violence and dark underbelly of the Italian upper-middle class at a moment when the traditional structures of family and religion were under threat. Edoardo Albinati sets his remarkable novel in the halls and corridors of San Leone Magno in the late 1960s and the 1970s. His own experiences at the school, reflections on his adolescence, and thoughts on the forces that produced contemporary Italy combine to produce a unique blend of memoir, coming-of-age novel and true crime. Along with unforgettable portraits of teachers and pupils, The Catholic School reflects on the legacy of abuse, the Italian bourgeoisie, and the relationship between sex, violence and masculinity. Winner of the Premio Strega
