The goal of the Namaste project was to realize a global vision of humanism in child neurology and neurodevelopmental disabilities and to share that vision with our colleagues in every country in the world. Practicing child neurology with a humanistic perspective means treating patients and their families with respect. We understood that this could have a very different meaning in other cultural contexts. Thus, we proposed a global effort to learn what humanism in child neurology means in every culture, society and country all over the world. We did not have any preconceived notions about the global aspects of humanism in child neurology. We explicitly rejected any attempt to impose a particular world view (such as an American or European world view) and designed the project to welcome contributions from everyone all over the world. In a global and interconnected world, we hoped to bring all child neurologists together to share the meaning of humanism in every culture, society and country worldwide. Our goal was to provide a global perspective on humanism in child neurology and neurodevelopmental disabilities. We have had tremendous support from the International Child Neurology Association. We wanted to be as comprehensive, diverse, nonjudgmental and global as possible. But of course, we know that we have almost certainly left out some powerful worldwide voices. We hope that this book will be the starting point to initiate a global and respectful conversation about the importance of humanism in child neurology and neurodevelopmental disabilities. Our presentation at the joint meeting in 2020 of the International Child Neurology Association and the United States Child Neurology Society is titled, "Humanism: The Time Has Come!" But there is so much more work to be done. As editors, we submit this monograph with the hope that readers everywhere in the world will join us in creating a better and more humanistic world for our patients and their families.

Universities are inherently and definitionally universal in their quest for the creation and dissemination of knowledge. They are set to defy borders that exist in parochial forms. Globalization which opened up borders has by design or default created inequalities and imbalances in knowledge systems. Undoubtedly, knowledge is power but there is difference in the power that is intrinsic to it and the power that is ascribed which is determined by dominant political and economic hierarchies. If knowledge predominantly flows from global north to global south, people seeking knowledge move from global south to global north. These imbalances are also seen within these regions, between cultures and communities, one claiming superiority over the other. These realities call for a reassessment of not only what constitutes knowledge, but also what encompasses the idea of borders. In How Development Projects Persist Erin Beck examines microfinance NGOs working in Guatemala and problematizes the accepted wisdom of how NGOs function. Drawing on twenty months of ethnographic fieldwork, she shows how development models and plans become entangled in the relationships among local actors in ways that alter what they are, how they are valued, and the conditions of their persistence. Beck focuses on two NGOs that use drastically different methods in working with poor rural women in Guatemala. She highlights how each program's beneficiaries—diverse groups of savvy women—exercise their agency by creatively appropriating, resisting, and reinterpreting the lessons of the NGOs to match their personal needs. Beck uses this dynamic—in which the goals of the developers and women do not often overlap—to theorize development projects as social interactions in which policymakers, workers, and beneficiaries critically shape what happens on the ground. This book displaces the notion that development projects are top-down northern interventions into a passive global south by offering a provocative account of how local conditions, ongoing interactions, and even fundamental tensions inherent in development work allow such projects to persist, but in new and unexpected ways.
