Kniha nabízí rozbor prozaické tvorby portugalských spisovatelů Branquinha da Fonseky (1905–1974) a Domingose Monteira (1903–1980) z hlediska modality „neobvyklého“, známé v románských jazycích pod termínem „insólito” (fr. insolite). Teoretické vymezení konceptu se inspiruje především výzkumem brazilských badatelů, pro něž se jedná o modalitu sloužící k literárnímu vyjádření něčeho mimořádného, nadpřirozeného či nepřirozeného, jehož účinkem je údiv, strach, nejistota či neklid. Současně se zde přihlíží k vymezení kategorie „neobvyklého“ coby všeho ne-typického. Všechny představené prózy vynikají určitým stupněm neobvyklosti: jedná se o inspiraci folklorem (motivy přízraku, bílého vlka a pokladu), obrazy dvojnictví, paranormální jevy a motivy děsivé džungle či strašidelného domu. Zatímco dílo Branquinha da Fonseky je již nějakou dobu v Portugalsku poměrně známé, tvorba Domingose Monteira není v současnosti dostatečně zpracována. Tato kniha si tudíž klade za cíl dílo tohoto rodáka z provincie Trás-os-Montes jednak detailněji popsat a analyzovat, jednak postavit vedle díla Branquinha da Fonseky. Kniha rovněž přispívá ke studiu tvorby Branquinha da Fonseky z perspektivy, která prozatím nebyla podrobněji zkoumána.

Com apenas dezanove anos, publica o Manifesto Nacionalista (1919), integra depois o Centro Sidónio Pais, fundando o Nacionalismo Lusitano em 1923 e chega a dirigir o jornal A Ditadura. Periódico do Fascismo Português. Em 1924, prefacia os discursos de Sidónio e chega a colaborar no golpe de 1926. Abandona nesta altura a actividade política, pendura a espada, mas continua a manejá-la, desta vez, através da pena, firmando, com a política, um compromisso estético. Este fascio reaparece, mais tarde, como escritor solicitado pelo SNI que lhe encomendava estudos sobre o pensamento político, história e literatura portuguesas. Em 1936, ano em que integra a Legião Portuguesa, redige a peça Trilogia de Édipo. Conhecidos os percursos biográficos, ideológico e estético do autor, ficaram abertos os caminhos para o entendimento desta obra. Há muito que Tirésias anunciava o advento deste Édipo, que o elevou até ao alto da escadaria, transformando-o no herói humano - em vez da "vítima" dos antigos -, iniciador do Novo Humanismo.

Over the past few decades, a growing number of studies have highlighted the importance of the ‘School of Salamanca’ for the emergence of colonial normative regimes and the formation of a language of normativity on a global scale. According to this influential account, American and Asian actors usually appear as passive recipients of normative knowledge produced in Europe. This book proposes a different perspective and shows, through a knowledge historical approach and several case studies, that the School of Salamanca has to be considered both an epistemic community and a community of practice that cannot be fixed to any individual place. Instead, the School of Salamanca encompassed a variety of different sites and actors throughout the world and thus represents a case of global knowledge production. "The book provides a deeper understanding of modern art in the Brazilian context, moving the focus away from the self-declared avant-gardes and towards a broad panorama of modernizing tendencies throughout the period, 1890 to 1945. The backdrop of sertão, favelas, carnival and samba - often left out of accounts that restrict readings of modernism to erudite arenas like literature, fine art or architecture - are foregrounded in an attempt to situate artistic discourses within the social and political struggles of the period. Race, class and ideological conflict are given priority as tools for deconstructing complex debates, too often taken at face value or misread as merely reflexive of European phenomena. The anthropophagic movement (Antropofagia) rates special attention in teasing out the meanings of primitivism in the Brazilian context. The book examines a range of visual cultural materials including paintings, periodicals, graphics and photographs, revealing a hidden archive that calls into question the very essence of how modernism is usually perceived in Brazil.
