Building on the two previous editions of his History of the Maghrib, Professor Abun-Nasr has written a completely new history of North Africa within the Islamic period which begins with the Arab conquest and brings the story up to the present day. He emphasises the factors which led to the adoption of Islam by practically the entire population, the geographical position of the area, which made it the main trade link between the Mediterranean world and the Sudan and led to its involvement in the confrontation between the Christian and Islamic worlds. In Morocco, this confrontation led to the emergence of a distinct religio-political community ruled by sharifian dynasties and, in the rest of the Maghrib, to integration in the Ottoman empire. The political and economic developments of the 'piratical' regencies of Algeria, Tunisia and Libya, the establishment of European colonial rule, the nationalist movements and Islamic religious reform are all treated in detail. The balance between factual account and interpretation makes the book especially useful to students of African and Islamic history.

The contributors rethink the history of colonial and nationalist categories and analyses of the Maghrib. Their goal is to explore the ambiguities, failures, and silences manufactured by colonial and nationalist scholarships and present alternative strategies and scholarship to the study of history, culture, and state-society relations in the Maghrib during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Despite the fact that the contributors come from different disciplines and perspectives - whether political science, history, or sociology - they share a critical view of the history of the Maghrib, and they approach Maghribi societies not as a footnote to Europe and capitalism, but within its own dynamics.

"A most welcome contribution on the state of the Maghrib at the start of the new century. It is the great merit of this volume that all these issues are analyzed in considerable detail, giving both scholars and policymakers the opportunity to be better informed of the challenges emerging from such an important but often underexamined region of the world."--International Journal of Middle East Studies "A fine collection of original pieces by an international group of authors that fills a hole in current literature. All the other works on the entire Maghrib are out of date because of the current importance of Islamic political movements."--I. William Zartman, Johns Hopkins University The Maghrib's core states--Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia--are confronted by many of the same dire political, social, and economic circumstances as the Arab and other Muslim countries farther east. However, they are often overlooked during debates over the future of the Middle East. This volume focuses on Islamic movements, emphasizing the importance of the Berber dimension of contemporary North African society and politics, and highlighting a crucial transnational perspective that underscores the Maghrib's ties to Europe. All of this is set against a backdrop of larger questions of history, memory, and national identity.

Islamic movements in North Africa have historically been distinguished from their counterparts in other parts of the Arab world because they have demonstrated a marked willingness to work within the political system and have at times even been officially recognized and allowed to participate in local and national elections. As a result, Islamic thinkers from the Maghrib have produced important writing about the role of Islam and the state, democracy, and nonviolent change. In this book, Emad Shahin offers a comparative analysis of the Islamic movements in Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco, exploring their formation and expansion in the late 1960s and the tenets of their ideology for social transformation. }Islamic movements in North Africa have historically been distinguished from their counterparts in other parts of the Arab world because they have demonstrated a marked willingness to work within the political system and have at times even been officially recognized and allowed to participate in local and national elections. He argues that the formation and expansion of Islamic movements since the late 1960s has come in response to the marginalization of Islam in state and society and to a perceived failure of imported models of development to resolve socioeconomic problems or to incorporate the Muslim belief system into a workable plan for social transformation. }

Berbers and Others offers fresh perspectives on new forms of social and political activism in today's Maghrib. In recent years, the Amazigh (Berber) movement has become a focus of widespread political, social, and cultural attention in North Africa, Europe, and the United States. Berber groups have peacefully yet persistently laid claim to ownership over broad areas of creativity in the arts, politics, literature, education, and national memory. The contributors to this volume present some of the best new thinking in the emerging field of Berber studies, offering insight into historical antecedents, language usage, land rights, household economies, artistic production, and human rights. The scope, depth, and multidisciplinary approach will engage specialists on the Maghrib as well as students of ethnicity, social and political change, and cultural innovation.

Politics And Power In The Maghreb written by Michael Willis and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06 with History categories.

The overthrow of the regime of President Ben Ali in Tunisia on 14 January 2011 took the world by surprise. The popular revolt in this small Arab country and the effect it had on the wider Arab world prompted questions as to why there had been so little awareness of it up until that point. It also revealed a more general lack of knowledge about the surrounding western part of the Arab world, or the Maghreb, which had long attracted a tiny fraction of the outside interest shown in the eastern Arab world of Egypt, the Levant and the Gulf. This book examines the politics of the three states of the central Maghreb--Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco--since their achievement of independence from European colonial rule in the 1950s and 1960s. It explains the political dynamics of the region by looking at the roles played by the military, political parties and Islamist movements and addresses factors such as Berber identity and economics, as well as how the states of the region interact with each other and with the wider world. -- Provided by publisher.

Now that North Africa is viewed less as the exclusive hunting ground of French scholars, those from elsewhere are seeing the region in its relation to the larger world rather than merely to its former colonists. Here American, British, and Tunisian scholars explore the Maghrib as a space where worlds have met through history, emphasizing its central role in shaping those encounters. The nine essays are from a 1998 conference in Tunisia, and were published as The Journal of North African Studies 6/1 (spring 2001). Distributed in the US by ISBS. c. Book News Inc.
