The Native Americans believed that the soul never dies, and death was a transition from this world to the next. Preparation for this journey was diverse across the vast geographical expanse of North America. Burials could be above ground on a scaffold or tree, cremation, mummification, sometimes the bones were saved, and a mass burial was conducted, caves and fissures in rocks were used to inter the dead. Some buried the owner's horses and dogs with the body. Human sacrifice was practiced, slaying the wives or slaves and placing them within the graves. Some tribes left the remains to elements to be eaten by wild animals. In contrast, lavish burial mounds were constructed over the dead. Ghosts of the dead were feared, and in some cases, the corpse was immediately buried, and their house burned that the spirit may not return. The mourning rituals were just as diverse. Many tribes mourned the dead for extended periods that included cutting their hair and gashing their bodies with wounds or even cutting off their fingers to show their grief. Somber crying and wailing could be heard for days in the villages. Eighty-three different tribes' burial rituals are described in detail from first-hand accounts. This is your arcane journey into the spirit world of the Native Americans of North America. Native Americans use storytelling to get to know one another, as well as, passing history and messages on to newer generations. These stories are a heritage, but they will be known only as long as they are told. When someone ceases to tell a story, part of our cultural knowledge is gone. The stories of Native American Indians have always possessed some greater meaning. They are often based in nature or about animals. And even though the tribes may vary in location or beliefs, deep within you will find a common thread. Respect for nature can be heard in stories from tribes from Canada to Florida. The stories included in this book show Native American storytelling at its best. Among the stories included in this fourth volume Of the Native American Story Book are: The Woman and her Bear, The Story of Winter Snow, The Warrior of High Cliff, The Sacred Pipe of the T'salagi, The Origin of Fire and the Canoe, The Long Journey, A New Bow for Tani, The Trickster's Great Fall and His Revenge, Grandfather Thunder, The Origin of the Doll Being and many, many more.

Before the time of books, computers, tablets and recording devices, the history of many cultures was passed down, from person to person, by word of mouth. The rich histories of so many people were told in songs, chants, poems and stories. This was and still is the way of Native American tribes. Each in its own way enriching their stories with their own experiences. By reliving these stories and songs, we have the opportunity to bring life back to the ancient spirits that created them. We have a chance to walk with the spirits of the past. Native Americans used their stories to teach the children the traditions of their grandfathers. It was in this way that local customs were passed down and lessons were taught about how to live off the land and track animals. It was with stories they learned to grow crops and thrive in their natural environment. When foreign men entered and settled upon Indian sacred lands, the Native Americans were often forcibly removed. They were sent to areas unfamiliar. If it were not for their customs, language and tradition passed down through stories, they would have lost connection with who they were. These songs and myths were their way of keeping their legacy alive. Being there were so many different tribes with countless beliefs and customs, the only way to understand their ways is through understanding their stories. In this book, you will be shown a wide landscape of different tribes and hopefully present a true look at their beliefs, and understand the Native American people a little better. The mythology of North America is a cultural treasure house, but many of these myths and legends are hidden away in various old and rare books. It would be difficult for the average person to track down and collect this material because the rarity of some of these books makes them hard to find. So, this vast body of wisdom lies out of reach of most people… until now.
