Excerpt from The Natural History of Coal In the past it would seem that the root of our difficulties in regard to agreement on such points has been the initial hypothesis, that all coals, or at least all the coals of the Carboniferous period, were derived from the same type of mother substance, accumulated under the same conditions, and converted by the same means. It is quite clear that such an assumption is entirely false. There was no one original mother substance, no one original mode of accumulation, and, if all the substances popularly termed coals, whatever their geological age may be, are taken into considera tion, no one mode of conversion. Modern research, as we shall see in the chapters which follow, has shown that each case, each seam of coal, must be examined, studied, and judged entirely on its own merits. When this fact has become more widely recognised, it would seem likely that our knowledge of the natural history of coal will progress more rapidly than in the past. Excerpt from Coal IT is now many years since a Work on Coal was presented to the public, and since that time knowledge of its natural history and appreciation of its manifold uses have been increased. Coal is indispensable to all civilised nations; it is not surprising therefore that the origin, position and extent of the seams have exercised the best thought and enquiry of geologists and prospectors; that its discovery and working have stimulated the skill and demanded the best energies of engineers, and the heroism and labours of innumerable miners; that its economical utilisation and application have been obtained in spite of years of necessary labour and research on the part of learned men in many branches of science. This book, though dealing only with the first and last of the aspects of the subject thus suggested, should be interest ing and instructive not only to students of various sciences, but to the whole of those people who, though proud of the high commercial position of this country, are unaware as to how greatly this is due to our Coal supplies. Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Excerpt from The Natural History of the Mineral Kingdom, Relative to the Strata of Coal, Mineral Veins, and the Prevailing Strata of the Globe, Vol. 1 of 2 The only traits of the Author's character which I can venture to delineate, must be derived from this Work, in which'he discovers himself to have been a man of acute observation and nice discern: ment, of great activity, and ardour of mind; and, what is not unusual in such characters, the warmth of his enthusiasm, on the peculiar sub-a jects of his contemplation, seems at times to have led him too far into visionary speculations. Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Coal Mining The science of mining so largely consists of practical applications of geology, mechanics, physics, chemistry, and other branches of natural knowledge, that it has proved difficult in many cases to decide what acquaintance with these subjects on the part of the reader to take for granted. The author is hopeful that sufficient information has been given to make the book self-explanatory, but students are urged to study these collateral sciences as fully as circum stances permit.
