Excerpt from The Nature of Physical Knowledge As the physicist ponders over the insight his findings are giving him into objective reality he finds himself look ing into his own mind, and the material instrument through which mind works, the brain. How well does this mind get into contact with things outside itself? Indeed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The question of the symbolic structure of physics is implicitly involved in any discussion about the character of physical knowledge and the development of physical theories. Actually many discussions would greatly profit from an explicit reference to and an investigation of this question, and much confusion may be avoided in this way. A book directly addressing the use and character of symbols in physics may help provide a point of view which is in the back ground of any consideration in the theory of knowledge and which is, to be sure, very relevant today, but - strangely enough - often seems to be missing as an explicit and central perspective in the present epistemological debates. The concept of symbol has different meanings. Its wide diffusion in various cultural fields such as religion, mythology, art, and psychoanalysis, constitutes the best proof of its semantic variety, but also of the danger of using it in too vague a way. We start here from the concept of symbol conceived in the general sense of a sign or a material medium which is able, on the one hand, to communicate mental or conceptual contents and, on the other hand, to des ignate things or situations in the world. In this way symbols make it possible for human knowledge to "translate" the mental activity grasping the real ity in conceptual frames, formal or natural languages, scientific propositions, theories and so on.

In 'The Nature of the Physical World', Arthur Stanley Eddington masterfully delineates the complexities of the universe, merging the realms of philosophy and physics with a poetic clarity. Written in the aftermath of the early 20th century's scientific revolutions, Eddington's work presents a captivating exploration of the philosophical implications of relativity and quantum mechanics. His literary style is both accessible and intellectually rigorous, employing vivid metaphors that illuminate intricate concepts while situating scientific inquiry within a broader metaphysical context. By emphasizing the limitations of physical measurements and the subjective nature of experience, Eddington challenges conventional perceptions, urging readers to reconsider the essence of reality itself. Arthur Stanley Eddington, an influential British astrophysicist, was not only a pioneer in the field but also a philosopher in his own right. His profound interest in the foundational questions of existence and his efforts to reconcile the scientific and metaphysical realms significantly informed this work. Eddington's background in both observational astronomy and theoretical physics, along with his commitment to elucidating complex ideas for a broader audience, highlights his motivation to bridge the gap between science and philosophy. 'The Nature of the Physical World' is a must-read for anyone intrigued by the intersection of science and philosophy. Eddington's eloquent prose invites readers to journey through the dimensions of reality, prompting them to reflect on their understanding of the universe. This book is essential not only for students of physics but also for those engaged in philosophical inquiry, making it an enduring piece of literature in the annals of scientific thought.
