It is reasonable to expect that a musician shall be at least an accurate and legible writer as well as a reader of the language of his Art. The immense increase in the amount of music published, and its cheapness, seem rather to have increased than decreased this necessity, for they have vastly multiplied activity in the Art. If they have not intensified the necessity for music-writing, they have increased the number of those by whom the necessity is felt. Intelligent knowledge of Notation is the more necessary inasmuch as music writing is in only a comparatively few cases mere copying. Even when writing from a copy, some alteration is frequently necessary, as will be shown in the following pages, requiring independent knowledge of the subject on the part of the copyist. Yet many musicians, thoroughly competent as performers, cannot write a measure of music without bringing a smile to the lips of the initiated. Many performers will play or sing a note at sight without hesitation, which, asked to write, they will first falter over and then bungle--at least by writing it at the wrong octave. The admirable working of theoretical examination papers is sometimes in ridiculous contrast with the puerility of the writing. Psychologists would probably say that this was because conceptual action is a higher mental function than perceptual: in other words, that recollection is harder than recognition. The remedy is simple. Recognition must be developed till it becomes recollection: the writing of music must be taught concurrently with the reading of it.

THE NECESSITY OF FORM IN MUSIC.-So much uncertainty and diversity of opinion exists among music lovers of every grade concerning the presence of Form in musical composition, and the necessity of its presence there, that a few general principles are submitted at the outset of our studies, as a guide to individual reflection and judgment on the subject. Certain apparently defensible prejudices that prevail in the minds of even advanced musical critics against the idea of Form in music, originate in a very manifest mistake on the part of the "formalists" themselves, who (I refer to unimpassioned theorists and advocates of rigid old scholastic rules) place too narrow a construction upon Form, and define it with such rigor as to leave no margin whatever for the exercise of free fancy and emotional sway. Both the dreamer, with his indifference to (or downright scorn of) Form; and the pedant, with his narrow conception of it; as well as the ordinary music lover, with his endeavor to discover some less debatable view to adopt for his own everyday use, -need to be reminded that Form in music means simply Order in music. Thus interpreted, the necessity of form, that is, Order, in the execution of a musical design appears as obvious as are the laws of architecture to the builder, or the laws of creation to the astronomer or naturalist; for the absence of order, that is, Disorder, constitutes a condition which is regarded with abhorrence and dread by every rational mind

Why sing if not to communicate supplementary information that words alone cannot convey?” Music and Literature have always been influencing each other and quite often music plays an important role in literature. Sometimes it contributes an entertaining or even humoristic factor, occasionally it pushes the action and at times it serves as a mirror of the culture to emphasize emotions and environment of the characters. Joyce’s characters in Dubliners sing and perform when they can no longer speak about their frustrations or passions. Therefore the musical allusions always imply a clash between reality and imagination. What is desired in the song will almost certainly not happen. “In its attributes of direct emotional expressiveness, its allusiveness, its contact with the collective past through folk song and physical rhythm, and in its tremendous emotional range from the banal to the sublime, music offers resources that in certain ways can challenge or surpass spoken language.” In Dubliners Joyce uses music in three distinct ways. Firstly, in a realistic manner to define the real world in which his character live in. Secondly to emphasize the importance of romance and form the background and the texture of their lives and thirdly for the revelation of character because his characters reveal themselves through music.

It has been stated in the body of this work that the most difficult points have arisen in connection with Section 6 of the Statute of 1886. These points are more important in connection with musical copy- or performing-right than with any other subject-matter. This arises partly from the fact that many musical works of foreign origin (especially lyricodramatic ones) have fallen into the public domain, the title to protection under conventions between Great Britain and other States having lapsed through non-compliance with the necessity for registration arising on those documents. It has been asserted by some that it was the intention of the Legislature to "stretch backwards" (to use the homely, but vigorous phrase of a late eminent judge) the scope of the Convention of Berne so as to benefit authors who had lost their right by negligence; and to wake up again copyrights forty years old, it may be, a strange exemplification of the French proverb, "Le bien vient en dormant." There are several different periods to which, it may be argued, the statutory scope ought to be carried back, as will be hereafter seen. In the case of conventions with States which do not wish to join that of Berne, there must be some limit in point of antiquity to the claim of works to be swept in; and what that limit is to be under every combination of circumstances is not finally decided.
