I run all the way to my tree, so that once I get there, my body’s nice and warm. Most people would say it’s too cold now to hang out in a salt marsh, even with the sun and even with a baby blanket wrapped around me, but I’m not most people. Eleven-year-old Naomi ‘Chirp’ Orenstein and her family live an idyllic life on Cape Cod on the east coast of America. Surrounded by sandy beaches, fresh air and wildlife, Chirp is free to roam as she pleases. But when Chirp’s mum is diagnosed with a life-threatening disease, her happy little world begins to collapse around her. Chirp finds solace in her beloved birdwatching, and her friendship with mysterious outsider Joey. Chirp and Joey take on the world together, dreaming up a host of daring adventures. They explore the woods and the salt marshes – they want to see everything they can. But Chirp cannot keep running forever.

At 46, Jen McGuire made good on a daydream. A little whisper of something that had sustained her through 25 years of raising four boys alone. She would sit in a broken down car in the school line up and think, "Europe." Pick nits our of her kids' hair, then her own afterwards and think, "Alone." Move from one rental home to another, and another, and think, "Someday." Someday she could go places. Beyond No Frills. Beyond the schoolyard. Beyond the park and the laundromat. Someday Italy. Someday France. Someday, maybe even Ireland. When her nest emptied, she did it. Armed with just enough money to rent a studio apartment, her laptop for remote work, and two fancy dresses she will never wear, she flew the coop and spent four months alone. For the first time ever, completely alone. And lost. And found. And lost again. And she saw a monkey. In Ireland. Read on.

Nest written by Terry Goodkind and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-15 with Fiction categories.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Terry Goodkind reinvents the paranormal thriller with a provocative, page-turning confrontation with true evil. In the wake of her brother's brutal murder, Kate Bishop has a lot of questions. Why was her brother keeping a man chained in his cellar? What was his relationship with the detective now leading the investigation into his death? Could his murder be connected to the death of their reclusive uncle two weeks earlier? One man, the enigmatic author of a book called A Brief History of Evil contacts Kate saying he has the answers to her questions – answers that will expose her to the nature of true evil. Kate, he says, has a hidden talent, a talent that has marked her for death at the hands of humanity's super-predators... An explosive mix of action and suspense, Nest is a dangerous journey to the back alleys of the darknet, to the darkest corners of our minds, and to the very origins of what it is to be human – a place few have ventured and fewer still have survived. What people are saying about NEST: 'Nest is a chilling ride. It was so vivid in description it was hair-raising' 'Spine-chilling, gritty, and hands down one of the best thrillers I've read this year' 'I highly recommend this edge-of-your-seat thriller, I was hooked from the very beginning' 'If you aren't a heroic fantasy fan, you will be after this. An absolute must'

Disturbing The Nest written by David Popenoe and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-14 with Family & Relationships categories.

Disturbing the Nest assesses the future of the family as an institution through an historical and comparative analysis of the nature, causes, and social implications of family change in advanced western societies such as the United States, New Zealand, and Switzerland by focusing on the one society in which family decline is found to be the greatest, Sweden. The founding of the modern Swedish welfare state was based in large part on the belief that it was necessary for the state to intervene in society in order to improve the situation of the family. Of great concern was the low birthrate, which was seen as a threat to the very survival of Swedes as a national population group. The Social Democrats pioneered welfare measures that aimed to strengthen the family, to alleviate its worst trials and tribulations, and to make possible harmonious living. With the Social Democrats remaining in power continuously until 1976, a period of almost forty-five years, Sweden went on to implement governmental "family policies" that are among the most comprehensive (and expensive) in the world. In view of this major policy goal of family improvement, the actual situation of the Swedish family today presents a genuine irony; some have claimed that Swedish welfare state policies have had consequences that are the opposite of those originally intended. Comparing contemporary Swedish family patterns with those of other advanced nations, one finds a very high family dissolution rate, probably the highest in the Western world, and a high percentage of single-parent, female headed families. Even marriage seems to have fallen increasingly out of favor, with Sweden having the lowest marriage rate and latest age of first marriage, and the highest rate of children born out-of-wedlock. The early pronatalist aspirations of the Swedish government have been spectacularly unsuccessful, as Sweden continues to have one of the world's lowest birthrates and smallest average family sizes.

Stranger In The Nest written by David B. Cohen and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-02-26 with Family & Relationships categories.

A gripping account that provides solid answers to the age-old question of nature vs. nurture Providing scientifically grounded support for the thesis advanced in Judith Rich Harris′ controversial book The Nurture Assumption, psychologist David Cohen explains why children′s aptitudes and interests depend more on genes than parenting. Drawing on two decades of research in behavioral genetics to support this provocative perspective, Dr. Cohen puts a human face on the age-old nature vs. nurture debate. Children are not born as blank slates, he argues, and he goes on to reveal new research indicating that DNA, rather than parents, determines to a significant extent how children think, feel, and behave. This riveting book uses vivid analogies to illuminate complex genetics research, and explains why parental influence may have far less impact than is normally thought. A surprising account of how our personality traits and behaviors are determined more by nature than nurture
