"There is no one who doubts that alcohol and other drugs create enormous-and enormously expensive-problems worldwide, and here in the United States. Much of the media coverage in local and national news has focused on the opioid epidemic, and rightly so. Opioids are highly addictive and often lethal. And at the peak of the epidemic, in 2017, overdose deaths from opioids alone, climbed to about 47,000 per year; an astounding number.5,6 More astounding: that same year (and the year before and the year after) nearly twice as many were killed by alcohol"--

New and improved therapies to treat and protect against drug dependence and abuse are urgently needed. In the United States alone about 50 million people regularly smoke tobacco and another 5 million are addicted to other drugs. In a given year, millions of these individuals attemptâ€"with or without medical assistanceâ€"to quit using drugs, though relapse remains the norm. Furthermore, each year several million teenagers start smoking and nearly as many take illicit drugs for the first time. Research is advancing on promising new means of treating drug addiction using immunotherapies and sustained-release (depot) medications. The aim of this research is to develop medications that can block or significantly attenuate the psychoactive effects of such drugs as cocaine, nicotine, heroin, phencyclidine, and methamphetamine for weeks or months at a time. This represents a fundamentally new therapeutic approach that shows promise for treating drug addiction problems that were difficult to treat in the past. Despite their potential benefits, however, several characteristics of these new methods pose distinct behavioral, ethical, legal, and social challenges that require careful scrutiny. Such issues can be considered unique aspects of safety and efficacy that are fundamentally related to the distinct nature and properties of these new types of medications.

Network Therapy For Alcohol And Drug Abuse written by Marc Galanter and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993-06-15 with Alcoholism categories.

"Most mental health professionals are ill prepared to help the alcoholic or drug abuser to recover, even though addicted people and their families regularly turn to them for help. For many such patients, years of therapy have meant that they have achieved "insight," but their drinking has continued." "How can we engage and treat these troubled people more effectively? In this book, Marc Galanter outlines an innovative approach to office-based addiction treatment in which the therapist assembles a support network of family members and friends to meet with the patient and therapist at regular intervals. The bonds of social cohesion in the network aid the patient in overcoming denial, achieving abstinence, and avoiding relapse. The network approach thereby provides a remarkably effective vehicle for bringing substance abusers into treatment and helping them achieve recovery." "This is also the first approach to the treatment of substance abuse that integrates individual psychotherapy with support from family and friends. It employs contemporary approaches like relapse prevention, and helps introduce patients to Alcoholics Anonymous. Dr. Galanter defines how treatment is implemented and then illustrates his technique with many case studies. He provides a full explanation of what addiction is, from both a psychological and a pharmacological perspective. The book demonstrates that addicted people can be treated effectively with this combination of individual therapy, self-help, and peer support."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Addiction is not hopeless. There are common sense solutions if you're willing to look and see for yourself. This book provides real answers to this devastating problem on individual, family, community and nationwide levels. It is time for a change from what has been in place for decades to something that really works. After all, results are what matter most. Warning: This is not a book on disease. Helping The Addict You Love written by Laurence M. Westreich, MD and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-04-17 with Self-Help categories.

It's okay to love them. It's your right to help them. Addiction destroys people and can even end lives. When you know or suspect that someone you love is suffering from addiction you have two goals: getting your loved one into treatment and turning that treatment into full-fledged sobriety. Many addiction experts tell you that you have to disengage or risk being an enabler, a codependent bystander, in the wreckage of an addict's life; that you have to cut all ties or be taken advantage of financially and emotionally; that you have to protect yourself from your loved one, who isn't the person you used to know. But many friends and family members find it unnatural, even impossible, to turn away from a person they love who is at his lowest point, and refuse to believe that their addict is lost to addiction. Backed by his years of experience, Dr. Westreich guides you through the process of getting the addict you love on the road to treatment and recovery. He provides detailed scripts to lead you through pivotal conversations with the addict in your life, highlighting the words that he's found to be most effective and the words to avoid. With this book in hand, family and friends will know, for example, how to motivate their addict to recognize his problem based on the addict's own definition of what addiction looks like; how to "raise the bottom" that addicts so often must hit to a more acceptable level -- such as embarrassment, job loss, or ill health; and when to use gentle disagreement, quiet listening, or forceful confrontation to move the addict toward treatment, while managing and protecting their own emotions. Dr. Westreich also shows you how to engage a therapist in the process and provides methods for combating an addict's defense mechanisms. By outlining several treatment options, he helps you to weigh what each can and cannot accomplish, which is the most effective treatment for the kind of addiction you are dealing with, what each treatment requires of the recovering addict and the friend or family member, and how successful each is. Dr. Westreich also takes care to discuss the kinds of special situations you may face when the addict in your life, in addition to having a substance abuse problem, is a minor, is pregnant, has mental or medical diseases, or has other issues that are likely to affect recovery. Helping the Addict You Love is the guide that so many loved ones of addicts have desperately needed. Dr. Westreich supports you through the emotional process of helping the addict you love, tells you it's okay to want to help, and teaches you how to do so.
