Civic Art is local science is international. Against this background alone, it is justifiable that the German Institute for Civic Art should concern itself with recent research on urban construction in the UK and the U.S. In the age of globalization this would appear to be a matter of course, which surprisingly it is not. Much still remains unknown and a lot is regarded with prejudice. If we consider the inquisitive and lively exchange surrounding the many international conferences on urban construction around 1910, it seems as if, despite improved communication channels and increased information flow, international knowledge has in fact decreased since then. To foster this knowledge exchange, the fourth Dortmund Lectures on Urban Design that took place in 2011 featured British and American experts who presented recent findings and new concepts from universities and planning institutions in the field of urban construction. One is the endorsement which the lapse of time has given to its principles. For this he can take no credit to himself, since art can no more grow old than beauty. The statement of art principles is as eternal as the truth; and so, if a book enunciates these accurately as they apply to civic art, it ought not to grow stale. The reading of the original text has revealed also the progress in municipal art which has been lately made by cities of the United States. In keeping the volumes text up to date, through its several editions, it has been gratifying to note the character of the changes necessitated in the record of fact and condition and in the citation of examples. Many of the hopes (or possibly visions) expressed in the First Edition have become actualities; some observed tendencies toward better things are now established movements; and many specific conditions, which then were criticized, now have been corrected.
