Development economics emerged in the 1950s and, during its first quarter century, evolved in the context of both the Cold War and decolonization. The ascendance of free market conservatism in the west in the early 1980s was followed by the consolidation of the counter-revolution against the old development economics, together with a corresponding promotion of neoliberal economic policies that came to be known as the Washington Consensus. Over the last decade or more, reaction against the Washington Consensus has gathered momentum, pioneered within mainstream economics by those who emphasize institutions and market imperfections, as opposed to the virtues of the market. The chapters in this book provide expert and critical, but readable and up-to-date, expositions of this new development economics. A longer view of development economic thought is provided in the topics covered. Emphasis is placed on the extent to which insights of earlier thought on development have been abandoned. The volume provides a critical introductory survey of the new development economics, invaluable to all interested in economics and development studies for academic, campaigning and policy purposes.Jomo K.S. was Professor in the Applied Economics Department, University of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, and Senior Visiting Research Fellow, Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore, before joining the United Nations.Ben Fine is Professor of Economics at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.

Development Theory And The Economics Of Growth written by Jaime Ros and has been published by University of Michigan Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Business & Economics categories.

Why are some countries richer than others? Why do some economies grow so much faster than others do? Do economies tend to converge at similar levels of per capita income? Or is catching up simply impossible? These questions have vast implications for human welfare. After a period of lack of interest in growth theory, they are back on the research agenda of mainstream economics. They have also been at the heart of development economics since its inception some decades ago. This book endeavors to answer such questions by blending classical contributions to development theory with recent developments in the economics of growth. The unifying theme is that early theoretical insights and accumulated empirical knowledge of development economics have much to offer to research in the theory and empirics of economic growth. With the help of a number of recent contributions, the ideas and insights of the classical literature in development economics can be given simple and rigorous formulations. Together, they amount to an approach to growth theory that can overcome the long-recognized empirical shortcomings of neoclassical growth economics, while being free from the objections that can be raised against the new brand of endogenous growth theory. In addition to an original thesis on the contribution that early development theory can make to the research program of modern growth economics, the book provides professional and research economists and graduate students with an evaluation of the strengths and limitations of the different strands of inquiry in the modern economics of growth. In addition it presents findings on comparative growth performance across countries. Jaime Ros is Professor of Economics and Faculty Fellow of the Helen Kellogg Institute of International Studies, University of Notre Dame.

Development Economics In The Twenty First Century written by Claudia Sunna and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-14 with Business & Economics categories.

Development Economics has been identified as a homogeneous body of theory since the 1950s, concerned both with the study of development issues and with the shaping of more effective policies for less advanced economies. Development Economics in the Twenty-First Century brings together an international contributor team in order to explore the origins and evolution of development economics. This book highlights the different elements of ‘high development theory’ through a precise reconstruction of the different theoretical approaches that developed between the 1950s and the 1970s. These include the theory of balanced and unbalanced growth theory, the debate on international trade, the concept of dualism, dependency theory, structuralism and the analysis of poverty and institutions. The chapters highlight the relevance and usefulness of these analyses for the contemporary theoretical debate on development issues. Comparative perspectives are explored and analysed, including those of Keynes, Hirschman, Krugman and Stiglitz. The chapters situate development economics within current debates among economists and historians of economic thought, providing a platform for future research. This book is suitable for researchers and students with an interest in Development Economics, the History of Economic development and the Economics of Developing Countries.

With contributions from 35 leading economists, this forward-looking book explores the future of development economics against the background of the past half-century of development thought and practice. Outstanding representatives of the past two generations of development economists assess development thinking at the turn of the century and look to the unsettled questions confronting the next generation. The volume offers a thorough analysis of the broad range of issues involved in development economics, and it is especially timely in its critique of what is needed in development theory and policy to reduce poverty. An overriding issue is whether in the future 'development economics' is to be regarded simply as applied economics or whether the nature and scope of development economics will constitute a need for a special development theory to supplement general economic theory.'Frontiers of Development Economics' is an ideal reference for all those working in the international development community.
