General Practice has never been an easy occupation. In the past there were some clear structures and routes for new GPs to take. You could expect to join a practice and progress through the ranks, growing in seniority and confidence. You might have been informally mentored by one of the older colleagues; learning management and business skills gradually. It is no longer like this. The market has changed, the range of options is wider, and the way through the labyrinth is far from clear. You might find yourself confused and overwhelmed by all the new opportunities, possibilities and prospects. This book helps to clarify uncertainties and guide you towards the right path. It offers ways to formulate strategies when planning your career and maps out the landscape of general practice, enabling you to make, confident and informed decisions about your professional future. Supporting the initiative of First5(R), The New GP's Handbook is highly recommended for newly qualified GPs who will find it answers so many of their questions and helps make the first five years (and beyond) in general practice more understandable, productive and enjoyable. Experienced GPs too, will find the guide invaluable as a current, general overview. General practice is an exciting and rewarding career which provides a host of opportunities for new GPs entering the profession today. Finding the right job, achieving a good work-life balance and developing a culture of lifelong learning are vital not only for the fulfilment of new GPs themselves but for the future of the profession. This book will help you achieve these objectives. Clare J Taylor, in the Foreword

The upheavals of the NHS reforms have caused a great deal of stress and uncertainty in primary care, and professional development and support for general practitioners needs to take account of this. This book offers a group supervision model which can be used to develop the core competencies needed for GPs to make the new primary care organisations work. The book analyses how primary care professionals have dealt with the various reforms of the past decade, and picks apart the paralysing culture of politeness, conflict avoidance and rivalry for power, to reveal how at the core of reform is the struggle for each GP to construct a new professional identity which integrates medicine, management and politics. It proposes ways GPs can benefit from these experiences to become equipped with the necessary competencies to be active members or dynamic leaders in the new primary care organisations. The doctor-patient relationship is no longer one-to-one, but located within a group matrix, in the same way that a GP is now required to work within a group framework. This book enables GPs to develop the essential group skills they now need, and on which the success of the healthcare reforms ultimately depends.

Will The New Gp Contract Lead To Cost Effective Medical Practice written by Tony Scott and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991 with Cost effectiveness categories.

Prior to April 1st 1990 the general practitioners' contract was defined only in general terms. However, since that date the range of services provided by GPs has been more formally defined. The main aim of the new contract was to confirm formally general practice as the ideal setting for the prevention of illness and promotion of health. Various health prevention and promotion activities, most in the form of screening, have therefore been written into the new terms of service. The core of the contract is the result of public demands and political popularity, rather than as a result of careful clinical and economic evaluation. The setting of priorities in primary health care should be related to the evaluation of relative cost effectiveness of different GP activities. This paper examines the evidence concerning the cost effectiveness of each core contract proposal and will examine the main factors affecting: 1) the assessment of priorities within each proposal, and 2) the assessment of priorities between each proposal.

The Good GP Training Guide is a travel guide-style book for trainees in general practice. Written by over a hundred contributors assembled from five continents, it includes contributions from leading writers in primary care. It is written in an accessible style with down-to-earth tips and anecdotes, sometimes irreverent, from real life. There is an emphasis on the reality of general practice. It also contains humorous or touching vignettes with accompanying linocut artwork from the Red Roses exhibition. The book's first section covers hospital placements. It is intended to show trainees how to get the most out of their training posts. Beginning with basic information on behaviour required in the hospital setting, there are chapters looking at cardiology, ophthalmology, rheumatology, etc. These chapters are split up into handy lists, covering the basics, tips on patients and PDP pointers. The second section covers GP rotations. It gives information on passing the various RCGP exams as well as realistic advice on other facets of general practice. The third section looks at finding a job and making the transition to an independent practitioner. Options for broadening a doctor's career are looked here, with chapters on event medicine, academia, teaching, etc. There is information on how stay out of trouble and how to use social media safely and without running foul of the GMC. The book offers the ultimate guide to the training process. It covers the entire training experience and the practicalities of what comes after.
