Routledge International Handbook of Irish Studies begins with the reversal in Irish fortunes after the 2008 global economic crash. The chapters included address not only changes in post-Celtic Tiger Ireland but also changes in disciplinary approaches to Irish Studies that the last decade of political, economic, and cultural unrest have stimulated. Since 2008, Irish Studies has been directly and indirectly influenced by the crash and its reverberations through the economy, political landscape, and social framework of Ireland and beyond. Just as Irish society has had to dramatically reconceive its economic and global identity after the crash, Irish Studies has had to shift its theoretical modes and its objects of analysis in order to keep pace with these changes and upheavals. This book captures the dynamic ways the discipline has evolved since 2008, exploring how the age of austerity and renewal has transformed both Ireland and scholarly approaches to understanding Ireland. Professor Dermot Keogh's Twentieth-Century Ireland, the sixth and final book in the New Gill History of Ireland series, is a wide-ranging, informative and hugely engaging study of the long twentieth century, surveying politics, administrative history, social and religious history, culture and censorship, politics, literature and art. It focuses on the consolidation of the new Irish state over the course of the twentieth century. Professor Keogh highlights the long tragedy of emigration, its effect on the Irish psyche and on the under-performance of the Irish economy. He emphasises the lost opportunities for reform of the 1960s and early 70s. Membership of the EU had a diminished impact due to short-term and sectionally motivated political thinking and an antiquated government structure. Professor Keogh looks at how the despair of the 1950s revisited the country in the 1980s as almost an entire generation felt compelled to emigrate, very often as undocumented workers in the United States. Professor Keogh also argues that the violence in Northern Ireland from the late 1960s was an Anglo-Irish failure which was turned around only when Britain acknowledged the role of the Irish government in its resolution. The history essays in this volume explore how expressions of identityâ "particularly religious and political identityâ "shaped the experiences of Irish people from the early seventeenth to the early twentieth centuries, both in Ireland and abroad. They consist of an examination of the role played by Bonamargy Friary in the Antrim MacDonnellsâ (TM) presentation of their familyâ (TM)s status in the early seventeenth century; an exploration of the important role played by Irish courtiers during the years of Charles IIâ (TM)s Continental exile; a discussion of tensions between Irish Presbyterians and Anglicans in the 1720s and 1730s, with a particular focus on James Arbuckleâ (TM)s Hibernicusâ (TM)s Letters; an overview of the fraught relations between Irish Presbyterians and their Anglican neighbours on the frontier of Britainâ (TM)s North American colonies in the middle decades of the eighteenth century; an illustration of the masculinist rhetoric employed by Ulster Unionists during the Home Rule crisis from 1912 to 1914; a discussion of the anti-treaty IRAâ (TM)s use of arson attacks in three Munster counties during the Irish Civil War; and, finally, an examination of the impact of W. P. Nicholsonâ (TM)s evangelical crusade on Ulster Protestant society in the early 1920s. The essays in the literature section of this collection represent an eclectic range of interests in Irish literature and Irish literary history.
