Until India gained its independence from Britain in 1947, one third of the country was ruled by a lazy, pampered group of 565 maharajahs, or princes. They led hedonistic lives with scores of wives and concubines, palaces and jewels, and spent much of their time playing polo and tiger hunting. The late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi taxed the maharajahs almost out of existence, and few physical traces of their former glory remain. However, a new breed of commercial princes has sprung up in their place.

The Madwoman S Underclothes written by Germaine Greer and has been published by Atlantic Monthly Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994-01-10 with Fiction categories.

Always strong and fearless, Germaine Greer strikes right at the heart of the matter--be it John F. Kennedy and vaginal deodorants, rape and artificial insemination, cosmetic surgery, the death of Jimi Hendrix, or the famine in Ethiopia. This collection represents a mosaic of essays, long and short, some of which are appearing for the first time in print and all of which chafe the conventional and are bristling with argument. From the youthful liveliness of her sixties pieces, which "got up everybody's nose," to the depth and complexity of her later work, The Madwoman's Underclothes is a reflection both of an era and of the changing ideas and styles of Germaine Greer: "The essays on Brazil, Cuba, and Ethiopia represent my coming of age. Something like a coherent system of values is beginning to emerge after my years of wandering, although I have certainly not arrived at a set of articles of faith, and never will, I hope." Greer's opinions on social, political, and sexual trends and mores are tendered in her unique fashion--outspoken, with rapier wit and no tolerance for narrow-mindedness. But as explosive, angry, and often funny as these essays are, they also reveal tenderness and sadness and that emotion that underlies all of Greer's work--passionate commitment.

In 1498, when Vasco da Gama set foot in Kerala looking for Christians and spices, he unleashed a wave of political fury that would topple local powers like a house of cards. The cosmopolitan fabric of a vibrant trading society - with its Jewish and Arab merchants, Chinese pirate heroes and masterful Hindu Zamorins - was ripped apart, heralding an age of violence and bloodshed. One prince, however, emerged triumphant from this descent into chaos. Shrewdly marrying Western arms to Eastern strategy, Martanda Varma consecrated the dominion of Travancore, destined to become one of the most dutiful pillars of the British Raj. What followed was two centuries of internecine conflict in one of India's premier princely states, culminating in a dynastic feud between two sisters battling to steer the fortunes of their house on the eve of Independence. Manu S. Pillai's retelling of this sprawling saga focuses on the remarkable life and work of Sethu Lakshmi Bayi, the last - and forgotten - queen of the House of Travancore. The supporting cast includes the flamboyant painter Raja Ravi Varma and his wrathful wife, scheming matriarchs of 'violent, profligate and sordid' character, wife-swapping court favourites, vigilant English agents, quarrelling consorts and lustful kings. Extensively researched and vividly rendered, The Ivory Throne conjures up a dramatic world of political intrigues and factions, black magic and conspiracies, crafty ceremonies and splendorous temple treasures, all harnessed in a tragic contest for power and authority in the age of empire.
