The idea of Peace Linguistics (PL) has been around for decades. However, the practice of PL has only occurred much more recently, only within the last few years, since the first creditbearing, university-level PL course was taught at Brigham Young University-Hawaii in 2017. Since then, the field of NPL has grown beyond its original goals, of using peaceful language and language that avoids or de-escalates conflict. The New Peace Linguistics (NPL) focuses on in-depth, systematic analyses of the spoken and written language of some of the most powerful people in the world, such as presidents of the USA, as it is they who have the power to start wars or to bring peace. As the first book to be published on PL and on NPL, this work represents a ground-breaking study of the power of language to hurt and harm or to help and give hope. The first four chapters of the book, which provide the foundation on which the rest of the book is built, introduce the concept of Peace Linguistics and the New Peace Linguistics, starting with the origins of PL and coming to the present day. The remaining Part Two and Part Three chapters present in-depth, systematic NPL analyses of George W. Bush, Colin L. Powell, Barack H. Obama, Donald J. Trump and Joseph R. Biden. The concluding chapter reiterates the most important distinguishing and recurring features of NPL, and looks at where the field may be headed in the future.

You’ve heard the speeches. Now see how they work—that is, how language can be used to convey information—or misinformation—to persuade, to rouse, to obfuscate. Linguist and researcher Dr. Andy Curtis deconstructs five major speeches by Donald Trump and examines them move by move, line by line, and explains how they function. Thoroughly researched (citing well over 200 sources) and engagingly written, this book pulls back the curtain to show you how this kind of speechifying works. Words matter, whether you’re speaking them or hearing them. As a global citizen, you owe it to yourself to understand the deeper meaning of the messages targeted at you. With a better understanding of how language works, you’ll be better equipped to make sense of what you hear, and to distinguish fact from fiction.

Traditional politeness theory is rooted in pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and discourse analyses. How it is invoked, interpreted and enacted across various contexts and cultures has many complexities. (Im)politeness intersects with the social identity, shaping the perception one may have of another’s authority. Furthermore, the rules of (im)politeness are also molded around the power dynamics and circumstances of the setting. As a result, studies on (im)politeness have important implications for the use of pragmatic language and the development of interpersonal skills. Socio-Cultural Concepts of (Im)Politeness: Interpretation, Linguistics, and Discourse Analysis bridges the gaps between various theoretical orientations and fostering interdisciplinary dialogue within the fields of linguistics, communication studies, and cultural studies. It explores and critically assesses the concept of (im)politeness from a diverse range of theoretical and methodological perspectives. Covering topics such as rhetorical structure, contextual gaps, and genderlects, this book is an excellent resource for linguists, sociologists, anthropologists, communication specialists, professionals, researchers, scholars, academicians, and more.
