The Artist Philosopher And New Philosophy written by George Smith and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-11 with Art categories.

In The Artist-Philosopher and New Philosophy, Smith argues that Western Metaphysics has indeed come to what Heidegger describes as “an end.” That is hardly to say philosophy as such is over or soon to disappear; rather, its purpose as a medium of cultural change and as a generator of history has run its course. He thus calls for a New Philosophy, conceptualized by the artist-philosopher who “makes” or “poeticizes” New Philosophy, spanning literary and theoretical discourses and operating across art in all its forms and across culture in all its locations. To this end, Smith proposes the establishment of schools and social networks that advance the training and development of artist-philosophers, as well as global digital networks that are themselves designed toward this “ever-becoming community.”

There is no more vivid example of a state’s power over its citizens than the criminal law. By criminalizing various behaviours, the state sets boundaries on what we can and cannot do. And the criminal law is in many ways unique in the harshness of its sanctions. But traditional criminal law theory has for too long focussed on the questions, “what is a crime?” and “what is the justification of punishment?” The significance of the criminal law extends beyond these questions; indeed, critical philosophical questions underlie all aspects of the criminal justice system. The criminal law engages us not just as offenders or potential offenders, but also as victims, suspects, judges and jurors, prosecutors and defenders—and as citizens. The authors in this volume go beyond traditional questions to challenge our conventional understandings of the criminal law. In doing so, they draw from a number of disciplines including philosophy, history, and social science.

Henri Bergson was an early 20th century French philosopher of the modernist period. Bergson won the Noble Prize in Literature in 1927. There has been a recent interest in his philosophical work. Creative Evolution (1907) is Bergson's best-known work. A New Philosophy Henri Bergson contains 2 articles by Henri Bergson published under the same title in the "Revue des Deux Mondes", 1st and 15th February 1912. Le Roy has added notes enhancing the scope of the articles. An excerpt reads, "We are made as much, and more, for action than for thought," says Mr. Bergson; "or rather, when we follow our natural impulse, it is to act that we think." ("L'Evolution Creatrice") And again, "What we ordinarily call a fact is not reality such as it would appear to an immediate intuition, but an adaptation of reality to practical interests and the demands of social life." ("Matiere et Memoire"). Hence the question which takes precedence of all others is: to distinguish in our common representation of the world, the fact in its true sense from the combinations which we have introduced in view of action and language.
