Excerpt from The New Philosophy of Modern Science The great increase in the range and the density of our knowledge has correspondingly and terribly increased the technique of civilization. The butcher and the baker can hold up a city by a strike but the light producing candlestick maker is less potent. The mechanism of civilization is top heavy and threatens to crush us all when it falls. All kinds of philosophies become pandemic by the contagion and repeti tion of words, phrases or abbreviated allegories. Pandemics of this sort follow each other in quick and alarmingly unex pected succession in all the phases of human endeavor. On account of their lightning Swiftness and our inability to know how and where they will strike, it is almost impossible to ad minister an antidote before the evjl is effected. The only promising method of prevention appears to be the universal inculcation of a saner philosophy. The rise and fall of man and his empire will constitute a laboratory problem for many centuries. Excerpt from Modern Ideas of Evolution: As Related to Revelation and Science Why then attempt such a task? The answer is two-fold - general and personal. First, the world of general readers is captivated, dazzled and perplexed by the new philosophy, and greatly needs some clear and intelligible exposition of its nature and tendency, some classification of its variations, and some attempt to explain its agreement or discordance with science and religion. Secondly, the writer of the following pages has of late years been besieged by so many letters and 1nqu1r1es respecting this subject, to which he has incidentally referred in popular books on science, that it becomes necessary in self-defence and to save time to prepare an answer which may meet all demands of this kind. ‘Oliver Sacks is a perfect antidote to the anaesthetic of familiarity. His writing turns brains and minds transparent’ Observer When Oliver Sacks, a physician by profession, injured his leg while climbing a mountain, he found himself in an unusual position – that of patient. The injury itself was severe, but straightforward to fix; the psychological effects, however, were far less easy to predict, explain, or resolve: Sacks experienced paralysis and an inability to perceive his leg as his own, instead seeing it as some kind of alien and inanimate object, over which he had no control. A Leg to Stand On is both an account of Sacks’ ordeal and subsequent recovery, and an exploration of the ways in which mind and body are inextricably linked. ‘In every way a marvellously rich and thoughtful tale’ Sunday Telegraph ‘Oliver Sacks is a neurologist, a man of humane eloquence, and a genuine communicator. The value of this book lies in its willingness to combine the technical and the demonic, to admit poetry and philosophy and the religious impulse. It is also intensely personal, and affirms the community of human experience’ Observer ‘A remarkable, generous, vivid and thoroughly intelligent piece of writing’ Sunday Times

Excerpt from The Metaphysical Foundations of Modern Physical Science: A Historical and Critical Essay How curious, after all, is the way in which we moderns think about our world And it is all so novel, too. The cosmology underlying our mental processes is but three centuries old - a mere infant in the history of thought - and yet we cling to it with the same embarrassed zeal with which a young father fondles his new-born baby. Like him, we are ignorant enough of its precise nature like him, we nevertheless take it piously to be ours and allow it a subtly pervasive and unhindered control over our thinking. To the medieval thinker, man was the center of creation, and all of nature existed purely for his benefit. The shift from the philosophy of the Middle Ages to the modern view of humanity's less central place in the universe ranks as the greatest revolution in the history of Western thought, and this classic in the philosophy of science describes and analyzes how that profound change occurred. A fascinating analysis of the works of Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, Descartes, Hobbes, Gilbert, Boyle, and Newton, it not only establishes the reasons for the triumph of the modern perspective, but also accounts for certain limitations in this view that continue to characterize contemporary scientific thought. A criticism as well as a history of the change that made possible the rise of modern science, this volume is also a guide to understanding the methods and accomplishments of the great philosopher-scientists of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Excerpt from The Realistic Assumptions of Modern Science Examined Tms volume is from the pen of the late Thomas Martin Herbert, m.a., Professor of Philosophy and Church History in Lancashire Independent College. He died at the early age of forty-two, in November, 1877, after one day's illness, having occupied this post for little more than twelve months. The sub ject treated of in this book was thoroughly congenial with his tastes. For years he had given it careful attention, devoting to it all the time he could com mand. His first published thoughts upon the sub ject appeared in the British Quarterly Review for January, 1874, in an article entitled Mind and the Science of Energy. The reception with which that article met confirmed his sense of the importance of his argument, and encouraged him to carry out his intention of more fully developing his thoughts in the form in which they are now laid before the public. The task of editing the book has been undertaken by his colleague, James M. Hodgson, m.a., b.d. Except the correction of some clerical errors, and slight changes in a few sentences manifestly obscure or incorrect, which Mr. Herbert would doubtless have altered had he lived, the treatise has been published as nearly as possible in the form in which he left it. The reader must, however, bear in mind that the manuscript had undergone no final revision for the press by its author. Had this been the case no doubt sundry alterations would have been made, including the re casting of some sections, the erasure of occasional unnecessary repetitions, and the addition of some closing paragraphs which there is proof the author intended to write. The division of the matter into chapters and sections is the work of the editor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A History of Modern Philosophy, Vol. 1: A Sketch of the History of Philosophy From the Close of the Renaissance to Our Own Day The appearance of a new representation of an important period in the History of Philosophy will naturally give rise to the ques tion as to what view of philosophy is regarded by the author as fundamental, and what is the significance, and what the value which he ascribes to its history. To which I answer that the whole aim of the studies of which the publication of this book denotes the provisional conclusion has been to shed light on the question as to what philosophy really is. As we learn to know a man from his biography, so also we must be able to learn to know a science from its history. And it is the more natural that we should adopt this path, since experience is continually showing us that, within the sphere of philosophy, contending views are advanced, each one of which claims to be valid, so that there is. No one exposition of philosophy to which we can point as developing an exhaustive conception of it. It is natural, therefore, that we should here, as within the sphere of religion, employ the comparative method. The history of philosophy treats of the attempts which have been made by individual thinkers to discuss the ultimate problems of know ledge and of life. It will be a result of no small importance, therefore, if we can show clearly what are the problems with which philosophy deals, how these problems have presented themselves at different times, and what, in each case, were the conditions which determined the different statements of the problems, and the attempts at their solution. If such a result can be approximately attained, the study of the history of philosophy will be of no small importance for the future development of philosophy itself. Excerpt from The New Philosophy When I was admitted to (i) B K and the symbols upon the key were explained to me, I was told that the hand at the bottom of the shield was pointing to the seven stars, emphasizing seven, the sacred number, and that the seven stars were the seven philosophies, which should guide the neophyte in (i) B K to perfection. I now understand that a (i) B K antiquarian has spoiled all this symbolism. I have little respect for historians - they are always spoiling good stories they worship dull facts and seem to have a small Opinion of the romance that interests the most of us. While Thomas Gresham in 1573 was planning for the propagation and glorification of the seven philosophies, a young freshman named Francis Bacon had entered Trinity College, Cambridge. He was a relative of Gresham by marriage, Gresham having married a first cousin of Bacon. He applied himself diligently, but three years taught him to despise the current philosophy of Aristotle. He left Cambridge without a degree, convinced that the methods employed in the sciences and the results reached were alike erroneous, yielding, as he said, no true fruit.of learning but merely idle disputation and schoolish ends. There was planted in him the germs of a new conception. He announced that a new method of philosophy must be devised whose aim should be the service and welfare of men and not the pleasure and delight of scholars. He claimed that it mattered little to the fortunes of humanity what abstract notions might be entertained concerning the nature and principle of things. He said The aim of all science is to endow the condition and life of man with new powers or works, or to extend more widely the limits of the power and greatness of man. He desired that a body of accurately ascertained facts should be amassed from which alone, in his Opinion, the processes of Nature could be understood and a solid foundation could be laid on which discovery and invention might proceed apace. By such means, he believed, man would attain to the knowledge of the courses and secret motions of things and the enlarging of the bounds of human empire, to the effect ing of all things possible. He held that there is much ground for hoping that there are still laid up in the womb of nature many secrets of excellent use, having no affinity or parallelism with anything that is now known, but lying entirely out of the beat of the imagination, have not yet been found out. They too, no doubt, will some time or other. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
