Excerpt from The New Philosophy of Money: A Practical Treatise on the Nature, and Office of Money, and the Correct Method of Its Supply It is a great felicity that destiny has accorded me the unique opportunity of submitting to the citizens of the world, and especially those of my own sex, this - the solution of the greatest of all problems - how to put an end to poverty and inaugurate a prosperity in which all will participate. Other writers have attempted it, but their works have been incomplete or have been prevented from reaching the general public. Among the world's greatest thinkers on this subject are: - Josiah Warren, E. H. Heywood, William B. Greene, Stephen Pearl Andrews, P. J. Proudhon, Benj. R. Tucker and others. Why is it that these writers are unknown to university students? For over half a century it has been known that Political Economy as taught in our universities is not a science, but a sophistry unworthy of those great institutions. We appeal to women everywhere, as preparation for the duties of citizenship, to read up this important subject. That Professors of Political Economy in many of our universities have been employed to advance the cause of the moneyed interests, is amply proved by George H. Shibley in his "Money Question - Monetary History 1850-1896." Therefore we must read and think for ourselves. The welfare of the race depends upon a correct solution of this question! Referring to a restricted money supply, which is the underlying cause of all the evils from which we are suffering, including the European cataclysm, and which we have amply demonstrated in this volume, we say with Abraham Lincoln "Who can contemplate without terror the distress, ruin, bankruptcy and beggary that must follow? .... Many free countries have lost their liberty, and ours may lose hers; but if she shall, be it my Proudest Plume not that I was the last to desert, but that I never deserted her. A major representative of the German sociological tradition, Georg Simmel (1858-1918) has influenced social thinkers ranging from the Chicago School to Walter Benjamin. His magnum opus, The Philosophy of Money, published in 1900, is nevertheless a difficult book that has daunted many would-be readers. Gianfranco Poggi makes this important work accessible to a broader range of scholars and students, offering a compact and systematically organized presentation of its main arguments. Simmel's insights about money are as valid today as they were a hundred years ago. Poggi provides a sort of reader's manual to Simmel's work, deepening the reader's understanding of money while at the same time offering a new appreciation of the originality of Simmel's social theory.

'I have lost interest ...in all that I have written prior to The Philosophy of Money . This one is really my book, the others appear to me colourless and seem as if they could have been written by anyone else.' - Georg Simmel to Heinrich Rickert (1904) In The Philosophy of Money , Simmel provides us with a remarkably wide-ranging discussion of the social, psychological and philosophical aspects of the money economy, full of brilliant insights into the forms that social relationships take. He analyzes the relationships of money to exchange, the human personality, the position of women, individual freedom and many other areas of human existence. Later he provides us with an account of the consequences of the modern money economy and the division of labour, which examines the processes of alienation and reification in work, urban life and elsewhere. Perhaps, more than any of his other sociological works, The Philosophy of Money gives us an example of his comprehensive analysis of the interrelationships between the most diverse and seemingly connected social phenomena. This revised edition of the translation by Tom Bottomore and David Frisby, includes a new Preface by Davi

Exciting the Industry of Mankind is the first comprehensive book about George Berkeley's revolutionary views on money and banking. Berkeley broke the conceptual link between money and metallic substance in The Querist, a work published between 1735 and 1737 in Dublin, consisting entirely of questions. Exciting the Industry of Mankind explains what economic and social forces caused Berkeley to write The Querist in response to a major economic crisis in Ireland. Exciting the Industry of Mankind falsifies the view that Berkeley has nothing to tell us about our present and future social and economic life. For the `idealism' Berkeley found in the money form is now becoming a fact of global economic life, when `xenomoney' and `virtual money' exchanges begin to dwarf commodity transactions, and the future becomes the dominant temporal dimension of economic activity. Philosophers, historians, cultural theorists, economists and lovers of Irish history will be interested in this volume.

Most people use money almost every day, and financial assets have become so important to modern life that they determine our fate both as individuals and as societies. Yet we seldom stop to think about what all of this means, how it works, and how it ought to work. How can a small piece of paper in your wallet have value? How can so much power be vested in the numbers that roll across bankers' computer screens? What role should financial assets and financial institutions play in our lives and in society? The philosophy of money and finance inquires into these types of questions, and takes a look 'under the hood' of money and finance, to address issues concerning the nature of money and the normative foundations of financial systems. Although philosophical theorizing about money and finance dates back to antiquity, the topic has only recently emerged as a central research focus. Economic globalization, technological innovation, the events of the 2008 financial crisis, and the Covid pandemic, have brought new urgency to a broad array of questions in this field. The Philosophy of Money and Finance presents sixteen original chapters providing a comprehensive introduction to this exciting new field. The book is divided into four parts, covering metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and political philosophy. Within each part, questions that are central to the topic are presented and discussed by leading scholars. The essays are written in a clear and straightforward manner and without presupposing any background in either philosophy or finance.

The central thesis of the book is that in order to evaluate monetary policy, one should have a clear idea about the characteristics and functions of money as it evolved and in its current form. That is to say that without an understanding about how money evolved as a social institution, what it is today, and what is possible to know about monetary phenomena, it is not possible to develop a meaningful ethics for money; or, to put it differently, to find what kind of institutional arrangements may be deemed good money for the kind of society we are in. And without that, one faces severe limitations in offering a normative position about monetary policy. The project is, consequently, an interdisciplinary one. Its main thread is an inquiry of moral philosophy and its foundations, as applied to money, in order to create tools to evaluate public policy in regard to money, banking, and public finance; and the views of different schools on those topics are discussed. The book is organized in parts on metaphysics, epistemology, ethics and politics of money to facilitate the presentation of all the subjects discussed to an educated readership (and not necessarily just one with a background in economics).
