Excerpt from The New Science of the Fundamental Physics But were all goals to be achieved only Nirvana would remain, and our optimism is to be measured by the progress that is being made, rather than pessimism as regards the reaching of the absolute. Surely the recent discoveries and the visions given us by the new Science inspire a most unbounded optimism. Excerpt from The New Science of the Fundamental Physics This work is dedicated to two whose love has been as true as nature, the inspiration of my life, the fondest treasure of my memories, and the foundation of the hope that these loves are the earnest of the great transformation to a love unbound by fate and a truth unfettered by ignorance. The blessings of such unselfish love inspires this, my credo of life: I believe in the intelligible ordering of all phenomena by a Good and Supreme Being in whose image we are privileged to understand and direct His creations. I believe in the most perfect philosophy of the world and of life that we can devise as the guide for ourselves and our organizations so that the heritage of the Past and the works of the present will bring most directly the Great Democracy of Truth and Love to all men. And I dedicate the full striving of my heart and mind to the gaining and giving of the Truth and Love of my Heavenly Father to men with the full Faith that we here prepare for that most glorious transformation to the perfect ordering of our perpetual Homeland with our Father and our brethren. Excerpt from The New Physics The reduction of the two systems of units alone, the electrostatic system and the electromagnetic system, to one common system in terms of length and time introduces us to a new era in Physics. It is difficult to dismiss the thought that we are one step nearer to a satisfactory understanding of the nature of electricity and its intimate connection with the aether of space. Since this work was prepared the scientific world has been profoundly stirred by the announce ment of the results obtained during the total eclipse of the sun of May 29, 1919. For the first time in the history of eclipse observations, beginning with the eclipse of June 8, 1918, efforts have been made to verify the predictions made by Prof. Einstein that rays of light from the stars, passing close to the sun on their way to the earth, would suffer a certain very small deflection. These recent observations seem to agree with the prediction of Dr. Einstein, and at the least they have focused the attention of the scientific world upon the fundamental basis of the Einstein theory. This theory has sometimes been called The Relativity Theory of Gravitation, and some reference to it seems to be required in these prefatory remarks in order that this theory and that proposed in these pages may not seem to be conflicting. At first thought it seems as if there is only room for one theory of gravitation, and, if the Einstein theory is receiving confirmation, it may seem to follow that the theory given within these pages is brought into question. It is for the purpose of 'showing that this is not at all the case that refer ence to this matter is made here. Excerpt from The Foundations of Science And, indeed, we are led back by psychology to approach logic, physics, and the other sciences we have traced, from a new standpoint. Psychology gives us insight into the theory of knowledge, and leads us critically to examine how it is that we know anything, either by logic or by the senses, or by that fertile union of thawo - which breeds science. Thus, by the road of psychology, we return once more to our starting-point, ready to study fundamental, logical, mechanical, and physical ideas from a. Critical point of view. We shall do well, then, to bend our spectrum round so that the violet theory of knowledge, which lies beyond the blue of psychology, shall be brought near to the purple of logic, where fundamental scientific10 the foundations OF science ideas take their rise and pass into the red of definite physics. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Physics The present tendency in physics teaching is to attach less importance to the formal and academic features of the subject, and to lay greater stress on the applications of physics in daily life. This change of front is in accord with the general movement in education which seeks to give the subjects of instruction a more useful content, drawn from the social and industrial life of the time. Judged by this standard, the kind of physics which views the util ities from afar or ignores them altogether is discredited. But a word of caution is clearly in order. A new truth is never the whole truth. The older physics had much to commend it, despite the caustic criticisms of zealous reformers; for the most practical thing in the world is the foundation of pure science upon which applied sci ence rests. T o eliminate or minimize the fundamentals while attempting to teach their applications is not to pro vide a royal road to learning, but a fool's highway to pretentious ignorance. Pure and applied Science are equally essential to a well rounded course. The one alone is barren; the other, when not well founded in the first, is superficial, disconnected, and trivial. Excerpt from Physics Within the last twenty years the methods of teaching physics have been revolutionized. The reaction against the loose and desultory methods previously in vogue was started by the em phasis given to laboratory work in the new books which then appeared. The movement gained impetus from the influence brought to bear on 'the schools by the Harvard Entrance Require ments and the Report of the Committee of Ten. This pressure on the schools resulted in a demand for closer observation by the students, involving careful measurements. As far as science is concerned, the most important result of this introduction of laboratory work into the schools has been the development in the public mind of a widespread recognition of the fundamental principle that knowledge is real and living to the individual, only when it is founded on personally observed facts and personal experience. Excerpt from Readable School Physics Almost since man appeared upon the earth, he has been asking Why? His curiosity has been aroused by all the various events that occur in nature, and he has been seeking the reasons for them. Gradually, very Slowly at first, by investigation and experiment, he has built up a vast amount Of knowledge, so vast that now no one mind can possibly contain it all. It has been a very long pro cess, and it is still going on - every year men are finding out something they did not know before. Now all those facts that have been brought together, studied carefully, and organised are what we call science. Seeing that it has taken thousands and thousands Of years to find out all that is now known about the world and the whole universe, you who are just beginning to study the subject cannot hope to learn all about it in the few years you spend at school, but you will find out some fundamental principles that are the basis of all science, and you will then be able to take an intelligent interest in what goes on around you, and be in a position to find out more for yourselves. Excerpt from Practical Physics: Fundamental Principles and Applications to Daily Life The World War has had many notable results, not the least important of which are: first, that it awakened a popular interest in and appreciation of physical and chemical science hitherto unmatched in the world's history; and second, that it led to an unparalleled concentration of able minds on practical or applied as distinguished from pure or theoretical physics and chemistry. There resulted many new applications of the fundamental principles of these sciences. Of these we have attempted to describe only such as seemed to us important in peace as well as in war; but even the few selected form an important addition to the domain of practical physics. We have doubtless included in this book more material than it is advisable for any class to undertake in a single year. This gives the teacher an opportunity to adapt his instruction to local needs and to the time available. We believe that it is most important to select Carefully just what material can best be used and to teach that thoroughly, rather than to try to touch upon many topics superficially. The present edition is as nearly like our former book in spirit, pedagogical method, and general content as the passage of nine years permits. In particular, we have tried to arrange the material in the most teachable order, to give clear and con cise summaries at the ends of the chapters, to set practical rather than artificial problems, to minimize the arithmetical drudgery involved in solving them, and to suggest many ques tions designed to get students into the habit of seeking useful information from the mechanics, artisans, engineers, and others whom they meet outside the classroom. Excerpt from New Perspectives in Physics Now for a brief description of the arrangement of this book. Part One contains a number of studies in theoretical physics which were independent of the interpretation of wave mechanics and were mainly written before my recent. Change of attitude. In my discussion, particularly of the nu clear field and of atomic particles, the reader will find a sum mary of ideas on the constitution of particles which I have developed for more than 20 years and also on the theory of the subtractive field, to which I devoted particular at tention between 1949 and 1952. Excerpt from An Elementary Text-Book of Physics, Vol. 1: General Physics Which has commended the other volumes and made them popular with Students who are preparing for any of the usual Elementary Examinations on Physics. The presentation of the subject in separate volumes suited to the requirements of the Student was considered desirable, as it enabled the author to deal adequately with the fundamental facts and principles without the loss of' interest always manifest when the Whole subject is com pressed into one small volume.
