Excerpt from The New Physics The reduction of the two systems of units alone, the electrostatic system and the electromagnetic system, to one common system in terms of length and time introduces us to a new era in Physics. It is difficult to dismiss the thought that we are one step nearer to a satisfactory understanding of the nature of electricity and its intimate connection with the aether of space. Since this work was prepared the scientific world has been profoundly stirred by the announce ment of the results obtained during the total eclipse of the sun of May 29, 1919. For the first time in the history of eclipse observations, beginning with the eclipse of June 8, 1918, efforts have been made to verify the predictions made by Prof. Einstein that rays of light from the stars, passing close to the sun on their way to the earth, would suffer a certain very small deflection. These recent observations seem to agree with the prediction of Dr. Einstein, and at the least they have focused the attention of the scientific world upon the fundamental basis of the Einstein theory. This theory has sometimes been called The Relativity Theory of Gravitation, and some reference to it seems to be required in these prefatory remarks in order that this theory and that proposed in these pages may not seem to be conflicting. At first thought it seems as if there is only room for one theory of gravitation, and, if the Einstein theory is receiving confirmation, it may seem to follow that the theory given within these pages is brought into question. It is for the purpose of 'showing that this is not at all the case that refer ence to this matter is made here. Excerpt from The New Science of the Fundamental Physics But were all goals to be achieved only Nirvana would remain, and our optimism is to be measured by the progress that is being made, rather than pessimism as regards the reaching of the absolute. Surely the recent discoveries and the visions given us by the new Science inspire a most unbounded optimism. Excerpt from New Perspectives in Physics Now for a brief description of the arrangement of this book. Part One contains a number of studies in theoretical physics which were independent of the interpretation of wave mechanics and were mainly written before my recent. Change of attitude. In my discussion, particularly of the nu clear field and of atomic particles, the reader will find a sum mary of ideas on the constitution of particles which I have developed for more than 20 years and also on the theory of the subtractive field, to which I devoted particular at tention between 1949 and 1952. Excerpt from The New Knowledge: A Popular Account of the New Physics and the New Chemistry in Their Relation to the New Theory of Matter Their work consists of facts experimentally obtained and theories based upon these facts. Their statements of fact may, emphatically, be believed, and I trust that I have not trifled with them. Their theories are as they would have them - acceptable so long as they explain the phenomena Observed. As these theories are presented in this book, they cannot be said to rest upon any definite concensus Of scientific opinion. The science is too new. Each theory is, rather, the work Of some one man who is entitled to speak as the authority paramount on that particular sub ject. I have taken them as so many defensible theses and have presented them as clearly and forcibly as I might. Excerpt from Physics In what follows I shall try to review very briefly the principal ideas upon which modern physics rests and shall say something about where we think we have arrived in our search for knowledge. I need scarcely remind you that in the natural sciences as in more practical afi' airs, how we have arrived is as important as where we have arrived. I Shall therefore spend some time in presenting detached fragments of the experimental evidence and inferences upon which certain conclusions are based, hoping in this way to illustrate some of the constructive methods of reasoning employed in research. The ideas which underlie all our thinking are space, time and inertia or mass. With space and time as a back ground, the physicist must pursue inertia and everything related to it, along every conceivable path. In this pursuithe comes upon four ultimate though related conceptions Matter, Ether, Electricity and Energy. The historical development of these conceptions cannot even be sketched in such a lecture as this, but it should be remembered an important part of our present knowledge of matter, and nearly all that we know Of the ether and electricity, has been gained not immediately but by inf er ence. In so many cases we see or know directly only the first and last link Of a chain of events and must search by indirect means for the mechanism lying between. Excerpt from The Rise of Modern Physics: A Popular Sketch When so many new and important things are at hand waiting to be done it is not easy to answer the question as to just how much time the consideration of the past deserves. All of us are probably agreed that the past must be kept in the background; and yet we are almost unanimous in thinking that the past must not be for gotten. A thing which is not to be forgotten must be known. The following pages represent what might be called an irreducible minimum for one who wishes to acquire a just perspective by not forgetting the past in physical science. Excerpt from New Laboratory Manual of Physics Thls point of view concerning the function of experimental work in elementary physics is maintained throughout the Manual, particularly in the statement of the purpose of each experiment and in the questions asked in the discussions. Consistently with the View that the laboratory course is not a sufficient basis from which to evolve physics as a science, it is assumed in the discussion of experimental results that the pupil has at least carefully read his text-book on the subject of the experiment, and is therefore in _a position not only to state the conclusions which are supported by his work, but also to pass judgment on the quality of it by comparing his results with those known to be correct. Excerpt from The Logic of Modern Physics None of the previous essays have consciously or immediately affected the details of this; in fact I have not read any of them within several years. If pas sages here recall passages already written, it is be cause the ideas have been assimilated and the precise origin forgotten; it is probably worth while to let such passages stand without revision, because such ideas gain in plausibility through having been found acceptable to independent thought. Excerpt from The New Physics: A Manual of Experimental Study for High Schools The teacher may grant the comparatively small result which is obtained from the study of physics by the method of lectures and recitations; but he will immediately ask, How can we obtain the time for laboratory work in physics - crowded as we are with so many studies? Moreover, the subject of physics is unlike that of chemistry of botany. In these subjects the cost of the apparatus and mate rial is comparatively small. Each student can have his own tubes, his own reagents, and his own mi croscope. In physics it is very different. The'ap paratus is expensive. A spectroscope, for instance, would cost nearly as much as the entire apparatus in a chemical laboratory. These are strong objec tions, and need careful consideration. The time, however, which is now given to recitation from text-books could at least be devoted to laboratory work; and the lectures could be reduced in num ber and only given to direct the students in their laboratory work. More can be done with cheap apparatus than is generally supposed. It is one of the objects of my treatise to show this.
