We are on the cusp of a dramatic wave of technological change - from blockchain to automated smart contracts, artificial intelligence and machine learning to advances in cryptography and digitisation, from Internet of Things to advanced communications technologies. These are the new technologies of freedom. These tools present a historical unprecedented opportunity to recapture individual freedoms in the digital age - to expand individual rights, to protect property, to defend our privacy and personal data, to exercise our freedom of speech, and to develop new voluntary communities. This book presents a call to arms. The liberty movement has spent too much time begging the state for its liberties back. We can now use new technologies to build the free institutions that are needed for human flourishing without state permission. The New Technologies of Freedom is part of a joint project between the RMIT Blockchain Innovation Hub, an academic research centre based at RMIT University in Melbourne Australia, and the Mannkal Economic Education Foundation. Mannkal's mission is developing future free market leaders. Mannkal promotes free enterprise, limited government and individual initiative for the benefit of all Australians. The American Institute for Economic Research in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, was founded in 1933 as the first independent voice for sound economics in the United States. Today it publishes ongoing research, hosts educational programs, publishes books, sponsors interns and scholars, and is home to the world-renowned Bastiat Society and the highly respected Sound Money Project. Who would have dreamed a hashtag would transform journalism, empowering individuals to report the news in real time?" (Fox 2012) Since the globalisation of the internet, it has been widely discussed if those new technologies help advance the cause of democracy in the contemporary world. Over the past decades, the internet has evolved into more than just a place for people to meet, in many ways. There are two opposite views of the contribution of the internet to democracy. William H. Dutton, professor of Internet Studies at the University of Oxford, says that those two opposite views see the internet as "either a technology of freedom or control." (Dutton 2007: 4) Hereby, "the optimistic view is that the Internet will tend to democratise access to information and undermine hierarchies" (4), whereas the negative view is that governments, institutions and companies will use the internet to extend their "control of existing institutional structures and organizational arrangements." (5) Dutton describes the most extreme form of that kind of control as a surveillance society, an image that strongly resembles the dystopian state of surveillance in George Orwell's 1984. In the following part I am going to trade the positive influence of the internet on democracy off against the possible negative consequences the internet could have on the process of democratisation.

Before 1930, the domestic market for electrical appliances was segmented, but New Deal policies and programs created a true mass market, reshaping the electrical and housing markets and guiding them toward mandated social goals. The New Deal identified electrical refrigeration as a key technology to reform domestic labor, raise family health, and build family assets. New Deal incentives led to nearly fifty percent of Title I National Housing Act loans being used to buy electric refrigerators in the 1930s. New Deal policies ultimately created the mass commodity culture of home-owning families that typified the conservative 1950s.
