The language of the King James Bible will always be part of the Latter-day Saint cultural fabric in English. It is woven into our hymns, our ordinances, and our scriptural canon, and it has been one of the primary vehicles through which we encounter the word of God. However, when the language of translation becomes too foreign, too distant from the present age, it is time to consider the possibility of another translation. The four-hundred-year-old King James Bible in use by English speaking Latter-day Saints is an artifact of the seventeenth century and is no longer a living and breathing text. The New Testament was written by the marginalized and impoverished; its language is that of common people and not the educated elites. The New Testament: A Translation for Latter-day Saints is an invitation to engage again the meaning of the text for a new and more diverse English readership by rendering the New Testament into modern language in a way that will help a reader more fully understand the teachings of Jesus, his disciples, and his followers. This new revised edition is an effort to correct the first edition—in nearly two hundred instances—both in the notes and less frequently in the text. In addition, the introductory material has been expanded to include discussions of the Joseph Smith Translation and on reading scripture, and appendices have been added detailing the many instances in which the language of the New Testament appears in other Latter-day Saint scripture.

This Study Version of the Joseph Smith Translation contains the full text of the New Testament and includes the inspired corrections and additions by the Prophet Joseph Smith. These corrections and additions are shown in bold type. Verse number changes in the JST are in bold type and the King James verse numbers are in parenthesis. The foundation of the text comes from an original copy of the Inspired Version published in 1867 owned by the compiler. This 1867 edition was meticulously compared to the original manuscripts of the New Testament translation as prepared by the Prophet Joseph and his scribes available at josephsmithpapers.org. The Study Version does not show any words or verses that were deleted by the Prophet Joseph. The JST Study Version was also compared to the masterful work of Dr. Robert J. Matthews "A Plainer Translation Joseph Smith's Translation of the Bible" to ensure accuracy. Additional insights and corrections from the Prophet Joseph mentioned in his sermons are also included.

This volume is a Joseph Smith Translation (JST) Red-Letter edition of the King James Version (KJV) of the New Testament. The purpose of this rendition is to provide a KJV reading that integrates the JST in line. Readers do not need to refer to footnotes, appendices, or another column to find the JST alterations since they appear in line, highlighted in red, within the KJV text itself. Those familiar with other red-letter editions of the KJV, will recognize the format. Words printed in red in those bible editions, were spoken by the Savior in the first person. They were generally confined to the four Gospels. However, rather than highlighting text in red when the Savior speaks, this rendition highlights in red the changes made by the JST. When altered, because of the JST, all original KJV text, verses, and chapters, are retained, but highlighted in blue and given a strike-through. This rendition of the KJV was accomplished through careful examination of the JST "New Testament Revision 1" and "New Testament Revision 2," as published on The Joseph Smith Papers web site of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Additionally, we occasionally referenced the bible used by the Prophet which was marked wherever changes were to be made. That bible can be found at the same website and on the same webpage.
