Excerpt from Old New York, Yesterday and Today The year of the Peace with Great Britain (178 3) found our city in a deplorable condition. Two great fires had practically wiped out its principal buildings; their melancholy ruins still stood, gaunt and depressing. The population had dwindled to a beggarly ten thousand. Grass grew on her streets and her wharves, to which no ships had come in years, had fallen to decay. The ma chinery for local government had ceased to function and everywhere discouragement and dej cc tion reigned supreme. But with the appearance of Washington and his famous generals at the head of their victorious troops, marching down Broadway, a great change came over the spirit of New York. She was instantly imbued with new life. Her streets were once more thronged and she became for the moment the capital of the New Empire. Had New York so remained, it is safe to say that no Capital City 1n the world could have rivalled the beauty and impressiveness with which she would have constructed the Federal Seat of Government. A glance at the picture of lower Broadway shown elsewhere in these pages, distant but a few steps from the sparkling sheltered waters of the broad Atlantic, gives some idea of the possibilities that are apparent. After being arrayed in battle panoply for five years in an effort to have the name affixed to some location within its confines, it is with unfeigned pleasure that the announcement is made that the Board of Aldermen passed an ordinance which was approved by Mayor McClellan and became a law on the 9th day of January, 1907, designating the triangular plot at the junction of Broadway, West End Avenue, 106th and 107th Streets, "Bloomingdale Square." In the good old days, sometime after the settlement of this island by our Holland ancestors, the middle west section thereof received from the place of that name near Haarlem, in Holland, the name "Bloemendael." Its earliest history is lost in tradition. Indian trails led over and across it. Where the tepees were located, how the wild creatures which prowled through its woods disappeared, and how and when the territory, densely covered with the denizens of the forest, became denuded, we are left to conjecture. At a later date its pastoral scenes were apostrophized by Irving, whose magic pen has immortalized the "River of the Mountains," as "a sweet and rural valley, beautiful with many a bright wild flower, refreshed by many a pure streamlet, and enlivened here and there by a delectable little Dutch cottage, sheltered under some sloping hill and almost buried in embowering trees."

Walk the bustling streets of Manhattan and imagine the lush and solitary land that greeted New York’s first settlers. Visit Ellis Island and envision the gateway to the New World teeming with immigrants. Vacation on Lake Champlain alongside the ghosts of voyageurs. New York is a state as rich in history as in modern-day wonders. Juxtaposing depictions of the past and present, historical photographs and illustrations against modern color images, this book traces the transformations that the state has experienced over four centuries. In images of New York yesterday and today---its art and architecture, business big and small, sports and transportation, politics and daily life---the book reveals the profound changes that the state has undergone, all the while preserving its remarkable historical legacy in subtle and surprising ways. From the streets of Harlem to Adirondack streams, from logging camps in the Alleghenies to Catskills resorts, Montauk Point to Niagara Falls, the Hudson Valley to the Finger Lakes---study in contrast or document of continuity, this is an enlightening, at times confounding, and always entertaining tour of the past and present throughout the great state of New York.
