It is of great importance that we should now direct attention to the proclamations issued by Sir George Gipps, immediately upon Captain Hobson's departure from New South Wales. The first of these announced that Her Majesty had revoked, of certain letters patent of the 5th of October, 1837, defining the limits of the territory called New South Wales, so much as related to the limits aforesaid, and that by certain new letters patent of the loth of June 1839, Her Majesty had extended these limits, which would now be made to include " any territory which is or may be acquired in Sovereignty by Her said Majesty, Her heirs, or Successors, within that group of islands in the Pacific Ocean, commonly called New Zealand, lying between the Latitude of 34 30" and 47 10" South, and 166 and 179 Hast Longitude from Greenwich," 8fc. The second, after a recapitulation of the former preamble, &c., announced that "Her Majesty, reposing especial trust and confidence in the prudence, courage, and loyalty of William Hobson Esquire, Captain in Her Majesty's navy, had appointed him to be Her Majesty's Lieutenant-Governor in and over that part of Her Majesty's territory which is or may be acquired in Sovereignty by Her Majesty, Her heirs or Successors, within the group of islands in the Pacific Ocean, commonly called New Zealand," 8fc. The third related to the acquisition of lands. Her Majesty thereby declaring that she would not acknowledge, as valid, any title to land " which either has been or shall be hereafter acquired in New Zealand, which is not derived from or confirmed by a grant to be made in Her Majesty's name and on Her behalf, but that care shall be taken at the same time...
