PAPERBACK ORIGINAL Sudan: Understanding the Oil-Rich Region of Abyei, is the fourth book from Akol Miyen Kuol. It is about the history of the Abyei conflict, the home to the Ngok Dinka, a sub-section of the South Sudan's largest ethnic group, the Dinka, but the region is under the control of the Sudanese government. Abyei is rich with oil and water; hence the Sudanese Arab Missiriyah nomads and neighbouring South Sudanese tribes take their cattle to the region for grazing and water during the dry season and spend a period between three and six months before they return to their respective countries. Akol wrote his fourth book about his native Abyei region to give South Sudanese and Sudanese, as well as the international community, a better understanding of the ongoing conflicts. He says the odds for the renewed armed conflicts between Sudan and South Sudan over Abyei are very high unless the international community takes urgent and drastic actions to determine its final status. The author urges his native Ngok people to fight relentlessly for their rights to save themselves, land, resources, environment, culture, values and language. Akol advocates diplomatic, political and non-violent revolution for the restoration of his homeland, Abyei, to South Sudan.

Abyei of the Ngok Dinka is currently contested between the Republics of Sudan and South Sudan. The authors of Abyei Between the Two Sudans make the case that Abyei is indeed part and parcel of South Sudan, as demonstrated by the role the Ngok Dinka have played in promoting the cause of the South nationally, regionally and internationally, and specifically in the wars of liberation in which they distinguished themselves for their bravery, discipline and unwavering commitment to the national cause of the South. The book also reveals that Abyei is an area of paradoxes which, though contested, has historically served, and could still serve, as a constructive 'Bridge' of peace, reconciliation and cooperation between the two border communities, extending to their respective two neighbouring countries, the Two Sudans.

This is the first volume of the Biographical Dictionary of South Sudan, an ongoing research project begun in July 2001. As the subtitle of the book, the Notable Firsts, suggests, this volume is primarily concerned with historically significant South Sudanese personalities, deceased and contemporary alike, and their illustrious careers. Luminaries from all walks of life are featured, including politics, traditional leadership, civil service, academia, and sports. This book has several main aims. Its primary aim is historical. It presents biographical profiles or accounts of the entrants and highlights the accomplishments and contributions of entrants in their respective fields of expertise or in the public sphere. But the aim of this study is not only to preset entrants’ biographies. It is mostly to place the entries in a broader historical perspective. The biographical dictionary, though concerned about personal accounts of entrants, it discusses pivotal events that shaped the history of South Sudan. The biographies are essentially linked to historical events that shaped or influenced the country’s trajectory throughout the period in question. Central to understanding the history of South Sudan is the biographical information of personalities who have taken part in major events or who have assumed important offices in the country.

Challenging The United Nations Peace And Security Agenda In Africa written by Dawn Nagar and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-29 with Political Science categories.

This book concerns the United Nations’ peacemaking, peacekeeping, peace-building, and post-conflict reconstruction efforts in Africa from 1960 to 2021. Succinctly discussed are historic and contemporary peace, security, and economic engagements within 18 countries spanning eight African regions: the Great Lakes; the Economic Community of Central African States; East Africa; the Horn of Africa; North Africa; the Sahel Region; West Africa; and Southern Africa. The book develops a neo-realist and imperialist critique that discusses how resource-rich, conflict-ridden states have become easy targets for capitalists, terrorists, and transnational crime, aligned to geostrategic parochial interests. Critically argued is that endogenous economic growth factors, if applied effectively, can achieve both peace and security, and meet the Global Sustainable Development Goals. Such efforts require constructive engagement with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council: China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US. However, the book contends that the cornerstone of multilateral engagement involves Africa’s 55 states and the African Union’s three major pillars: the Peace and Security Council, the African Governance Architecture, and the Post-Conflict Reconstruction Development Centre, which have the ability to move resource-rich, conflict-ridden states out of transnational crime and poverty. This book offers wide-ranging analyses of contemporary African diplomacy and a compelling critique of UN peacekeeping efforts in Africa, which resonates to scholars of international relations, peace and conflict studies, and African politics.

Territorial disputes remain a significant source of tension in international relations, representing an important share of interstate cases brought before international tribunals and courts. Analysing the international law applicable to the assessment of territorial claims and the settlement of related disputes, this Research Handbook provides a systematic exposition and in-depth discussions of the relevant key concepts, principles, rules, and techniques. Combining extensive knowledge from across international law, Marcelo Kohen and Mamadou Hébié expertly unite a multinational group of contributors to provide a go-to resource for the settlement of territorial disputes. The different chapters discuss the process through which states establish sovereignty over a territory, and review the different titles of territorial sovereignty, the relation between titles and effectivités, as well as the relevance of state conduct. Select chapters focus on the impact of foundational principles of international law such as the principle of territorial integrity, the right of self-determination and the prohibition of the threat or use of force, on territorial disputes. Finally, technical rules that are crucial for the assessment of territorial claims, especially the techniques of intertemporal law and critical date, as well as evidentiary rules, are presented. An essential resource for practitioners, international law academics and public officials including judges and arbitrators, this Research Handbook is a highly original collection of scholarship and research on territorial disputes and their settlement.
