In a book certain to be as controversial as Harold Bloom's The Book of J and Elaine Pagels's The Gnostic Gospels, David Noel Freedman delves into the Old Testament and reveals a pattern of defiance of the Covenant with God that inexorably led to the downfall of the nation of Israel, the destruction of the Temple, and the banishment of survivors from the Promised Land. Book by book, from Exodus to Kings, Freedman charts the violation of the first nine Commandments one by one-from the sin of apostasy (the worship of the golden calf, Exodus 32) to murder (the death of a concubine, Judges, 19:25-26) to false testimony (Jezebel's charges against her neighbor, Naboth, I Kings 21). Because covetousness, Freedman shows, lies behind all the crimes committed, each act implicitly breaks the Tenth Commandment as well. In a powerful and persuasive argument, Freedman asserts that this hidden trail of sins betrays the hand of a master editor, who skillfully wove into Israel's history a message to a community in their Babylonian exile that their fate is not the result of God's abandoning them, but a consequence of their abandonment of God. With wit and insight, The Nine Commandments boldly challenges previous scholarship and conventional beliefs. David Noel Freedman has been General Editor and a contributing coauthor of the Anchor Bible series since its inception in 1956. He is a professor in Hebrew Bible at the University of California, San Diego, and lives in La Jolla, California.

Taoism remains the only major religion whose canonical texts have not been systematically arranged and made available for study. This long-awaited work, a milestone in Chinese studies, catalogs and describes all existing texts within the Taoist canon. The result will not only make the entire range of existing Taoist texts accessible to scholars of religion, it will open up a crucial resource in the study of the history of China. The vast literature of the Taoist canon, or Daozang, survives in a Ming Dynasty edition of some fifteen hundred different texts. Compiled under imperial auspices and completed in 1445—with a supplement added in 1607—many of the books in the Daozang concern the history, organization, and liturgy of China's indigenous religion. A large number of works deal with medicine, alchemy, and divination. If scholars have long neglected this unique storehouse of China's religious traditions, it is largely because it was so difficult to find one's way within it. Not only was the rationale of its medieval classification system inoperable for the many new texts that later entered the Daozang, but the system itself was no longer understood by the Ming editors; hence the haphazard arrangement of the canon as it has come down to us. This new work sets out the contents of the Daozang chronologically, allowing the reader to follow the long evolution of Taoist literature. Lavishly illustrated, the first volume ranges from antiquity through the Middle Ages, while the second spans the modern period. Within this frame, texts are grouped by theme and subject. Each one is the subject of a historical abstract that identifies the text's contents, date of origin, and author. Throughout the first two volumes, introductions outline the evolution of Taoism and its spiritual heritage. A third volume offering biographical sketches of frequently mentioned Taoists, multiple indexes, and an extensive bibliography provides critical tools for navigating this guide to one of the fundamental aspects of Chinese culture.

In this challenging book Cyril Rodd questions many of the assumptions that lie behind recent studies of Old Testament ethics. He views the 'strangeness' of the biblical world and wonders whether there is an Old Testament ethics in the modern sense of the word - finding rather that the Old Testament writers did not regard many of today's ethical dilemmas as problems at all.Dr Rodd examines all the Old Testament writings on five ethical issues: the poor, war, treatment of animals, ecology and the position of women. He considers their validity and relevance for today and discusses the extent to which they can be referred to for authority - or for inspiration and guidance..

"The essays in this volume represent a theological interpretation especially focused on the Decalogue and the Psalms. The essays on the Commandments lay out an understanding of them as a kind of constitutional guideline for the life of the community of faith that is then developed in many specific and illustrative ways in the rest of Scripture - legislation, narrative, prophetic oracle, psalm, and wisdom saying. The various treatments of the Psalms focus especially on the way in which the Psalter is a book of theology as much as it is a collection of hymns and prayers. The final section of the book continues the theological reading of the Old Testament with some specific attention to the methodological issues as well as to aspects of the character of God and the nature of the human. Contents include: The place of the Decalogue in the Old Testament and its law, The sufficiency and insufficiency of the commandments, Metaphors for the moral, The good neighbor: identity and community through the commandments, The story of the first commandment: the book of exodus, The story of the first commandment: the book of Joshua, The psalms as a meditation on the first commandment, The commandments in the reformed perspective, ""That It May Go Well with You"" The commandments and the common good, The ruler in Zion and the hope of the poor: Psalms 9-10 in the context of the Psalter, The poetry of creation: Psalm 104, The hermeneutics of imprecation, Prayer and worship, The Psalter as a book of theology, What is a human being? The anthropology of the Psalter I, The sinful and trusting creature: The anthropology of the Psalter II, Constitution or instruction? The purpose of Deuteronomy, ""Slow to Anger"" the God of the prophets, What the scriptures principally teach, Theology from below: the theological interpretation of scripture. Man and woman: towards a theological anthropology."
