A jewel thief is on the loose in old London town and is murdering his victims; Sarah O'Reilly, who works as a typesetter in a newspaper office, becomes embroiled in the mystery that will eventually lead to India and a jewel with terrifying and occult powers. Amen Corner, London, 1864. Orphan Sarah O'Reilly has disguised herself as a boy so that she can work in the offices of Septimus Harding's newspaper, the London Mercury. She meets Lily Korechnya, a wealthy widow who writes a column for the paper under a pseudonym. Lily has been enlisted by Lady Cynthia Herbert to help catalogue her magnificent jewel collection. She is especially struck by several large gems that belong to the Maharaja of Benares, which Lady Herbert has promised to have made into a special charm. The gems include a fiery red diamond that seems to exert an unsettling influence over anyone who touches it. Then two gruesome murders take place -- first a customs officer at the docks and next a jeweller in Hatton Gardens, both of whom were strangled in an unusual, distinct way. A local simpleton, Holy Joe, is blamed for the murders but neither Lily or Sara are convinced the police have the right man. The trail of the missing gems leads them back to India, to ghosts, and the dangerous cult of the destroyer goddess Kali.

A walk into the woods leads to a terrifying discovery... (note very short story)ExcerptIt was beneath the immaculate blue of a morning in April that I set out to keep my appointment with Guenevere. We had agreed to meet on Boulder Ridge, at a spot well known to both of us, a small and circular field surrounded with pines and full of large stones, midway between her parents' home at Newcastle and my cabin on the north-eastern extremity of the Ridge, near Auburn.Guenevere is my fianc e. It must be explained that at the time of which I write, there was a certain amount of opposition on the part of her parents to the engagement - an opposition since happily withdrawn. In fact, they had gone so far as to forbid me to call, and Guenevere and I could see each other only by stealth, and infrequently, The Ridge is a long and rambling moraine, heavily strewn in places with boulders, as its name implies, and with many outcroppings of black volcanic stone. Fruit-ranches cling to some of its slopes, but scarcely any of the top is under cultivation, and much of the soil, indeed, is too thin and stony to be arable. With its twisted pines, often as fantastic in form as the cypresses of the California coast, and its gnarled and stunted oaks, the landscape has a wild and quaint beauty, with more than a hint of the Japanesque in places. It is perhaps two miles from my cabin to the place where I was to meet Guenevere. Since I was born in the very shadow of Boulder Ridge, and have lived upon or near it for most of my thirty-odd years, I am familiar with every rod of its lovely and rugged extent, and, previous to that April morning, would scarcely have refrained from laughing if anyone had told me I could possibly lose my way... Since then - well, I assure you, I should not feel inclined to laugh...Truly, it was a morning made for the trysts of lovers. Wild bees were humming busily in the patches of clover and in the ceanothus bushes with their great masses of white flowers, whose strange and heavy perfume intoxicated the air. Most of the spring blossoms were abroad: cyclamen, yellow violet, poppy, wild hyacinth, and woodland star; and the green of the fields was opalescent with their coloring. Between the emerald of the buck- eyes, the grey-green of the pines, the golden and dark and bluish greens of the oaks, I caught glimpses of the snow-white Sierras to the east, and the faint blue of the Coast Range to the west, beyond the pale and lilac levels of the Sacramento valley. Following a vague trail, I went onwards across open fields where I had to thread my way among clustering boulders.

Led by Commander Marcus Artorius Agricola, the five thousand soldiers of Rome's Ninth Legion are legendary for their aggressive fighting skills and superb leadership. The Legion is stationed in Britannia in the year AD 122, and Rome sends them north of York to subdue the unruly Pict tribes. But when they arrive, the unthinkable happens. They are routed and forced to flee toward the coast, ending up at a Pict holy place. Here, the entire Legion is mysteriously teleported to England at the beginning of World War II. The terrified men suddenly find themselves pursued from the air by "flying crosses" and on the ground by a relentless crew of British soldiers. The Legion flees to Crail, Scotland, trying to come to grips with their new reality. They discover that one of the Picts, a vicious holy man named Mormaer, has time-traveled with them. Worse, he is quickly learning the ways of this new world and won't hesitate to use his deadly knowledge against his enemies. When the Legion discovers that they are right in the path of another invading force-the Germans-they know they will continue to do their duty and defend Great Britain. But their shields and swords are no match for this era's technology. What's more, with Mormaer waiting to strike, the Legion may not survive what could be their last battle.

Harry "The Hat" Walker's life in and out of baseball was full of adventures and conflict. He got the game winning hit in the 1946 World Series as St. Louis defeated Boston on Enos Slaughter's mad dash for home, he won the National League batting title in 1947, and he managed three major league teams. In between, he was a decorated war hero in World War II and had an inside view as Jackie Robinson broke baseball's color barrier. Bottom of the Ninth looks at his career -- from his view, those of his friends, and some of his enemies.
