Out Of Eden written by Beverly J. Stratton and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-12-01 with Religion categories.

Out of Eden contributes towards conversations about interpreting scripture. Rather than adopting traditional views (creation and 'fall' or growth), this study integrates literary-critical theories and feminist scholarship to read the Genesis narrative in relation to concerns of contemporary communities. The question of how we might engage the interpretative process and the rhetorical power of texts as we live our lives 'out of Eden' is addressed. Stratton argues that the interpretration of Genesis 2-3 matters, that there are consequences for the actions we take on the basis of our interpretations, and that we should enter the interpretative process only with care.

Man, he brotherhood, founding fathers. It is argued that such words are and always have been used by educated people to encompass all humanity—men and women. Psychological and historical research in the past few years has produced evidence to the contrary: for most people “false generics” seldom if ever convey a female image, nor are they ancient unchangeable rules of the English grammar that have always been used by the educated. Using hundreds of examples, mostly from published sources, the authors illustrate what certain words are saying to us on a subliminal level. Solutions are supplied that range from word substitutions to suggestions for rewriting. Without a trace of self-conscious righteousness, and with refreshing humor, Miller and Swift provide surprising insights into the English language and the ways in which people use it and are used by it. They demonstrate that to be in command of the language, we must find clear, convincing, and graceful ways to convey our ideas accurately. We must recognize and replace exclusive, distorting, ambiguous, and injurious words.

Journalism: A Guide to the Reference Literature is a critically annotated bibliographic guide to print and electronic sources in print and broadcast journalism. The first edition was published in 1990; the second in 1997. It has been described as one of the critical reference sources in journalism today, and it is a key bibliographic guide to the literature. Choice magazine called it a benchmark publication for which there are no comparable sources. The format is similar to the second edition. What makes this edition significantly different is the separation of Commercial Databases and Internet Resources. Commercial Databases includes standard fee-based resources. The new chapter on Internet sources features Web-based resources not included in the commercial databases chapter as well as portals, other online files, listservs, newsgroups, and Web logs/blogs. All chapters have been revised, and there are significant revisions in Directories, Yearbooks, and Collections; Miscellaneous Sources; Core Periodicals; Societies and Associations; and Research Centers and Archives. The second edition has 789 entries. The third edition contains almost 1,000 entries. James Carey of Columbia University, who provided the foreword for the first two editions, has updated his foreword for this edition.

There is not a single book that gives a systematic description of George Orwells views on language. Andrei Reznikovs work is the first attempt to fill this gap. Reznikov puts together the pieces of Orwells language puzzle, scattered throughout his essays, diaries, letters, radio talks and fiction, and proposes the Newspeak model as Orwells way to formulate his theory. The theory is then tested with illustrative examples from three languagesmodern English, Nazi German, and Soviet Russian. Finally, the author describes bias-free language as an implementation of Orwells ideas.

Organized alphabetically for easy use, with cross-references to related words, phrases, and issues, this book goes beyond the scope of the usual reference book. It mines a wide variety of fields to present the background, current uses, accuracy, alternatives, and best practices for choosing and decoding common words and phrases, and offers a trove of suggestions for bias-free language. Unspinning the Spin is a practical, indispensable how-to that is fun to read. It’s invaluable for journalists, bloggers, students, teachers, government officials, and communications professionals, and it will be compelling for any reader who loves the English language. She is the author of the award-winning Dictionary of Bias-Free Usage and the editor of The New Beacon Book of Quotations by Women. Unspinning the Spin includes a preface by Robin Morgan, feminist activist, former editor-in-chief of Ms., and award-winning author of more than 20 books; and Gloria Steinem, writer, activist, editor, bestselling author, and cofounder of Ms. This book is the first publication of WMC Press, the publishing arm of the Women’s Media Center. “Given the growing awareness of sexism imbedded in our everyday speech, we—and the news media in particular—need alternative language. At last we have a comprehensive, authoritative (and funny!), feminist Fowler’s.” —Suzanne Braun Levine, author, first editor of Ms., and first woman editor of The Columbia Journalism Review “Language is power and debates are won or lost on how the arguments are shaped. Anyone who cares about politics, power, and the histories we make today will find Unspinning the Spin: The Women’s Media Center Guide to Fair and Accurate Language a reference for all seasons.” —Katrina vanden Heuvel, Editor and Publisher of The Nation
