Volume 1--The Time Machine, The Wonderful Visit & The Island of Doctor Moreau For those who know anything of the most outstanding British authors of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the name of Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) needs little introduction, for he wrote on many subjects. He is principally remembered as one of the 'Fathers of Science Fiction' and this six volume Leonaur collection focuses upon his writing in that genre--from the strange to the fantastical and scientifically prophetic--with which he will forever be associated. These wonderful and dramatic stories have been gathered together in these attractive, good value volumes in chronological order of original publication. In 'The Time Machine' (1895) an inventor-traveller visits several future destinations including a future populated by the gentle Eloi and brutish Morlocks. 'The Wonderful Visit' (1895) features an angel with dazzling plumage who visits Victorian England. In 'The Island of Doctor Moreau' (1896) a shipwrecked man finds himself on the island home of a mad scientist who is creating human-like hybrid creatures from animals. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

This collection of H.G. Wells's correspondence draws on over 50 archives and libraries worldwide, including the papers of Wells's daughter by Amber Reeves. The book contains over 2,000 letters, and while a few are business – to publishers, agents and secretaries – the majority are much more personal. Wells's private correspondence extends from letters to President Franklin Roosevelt and Prime Ministers Winston Churchill and A.J. Balfour, to persons such as ‘Mark Benney’, who wrote novels based on his life in the slums and his time in prison. There is correspondence too with his many female friends and lovers, among them Rebecca West, Eileen Power, Gertrude Stein, Marie Stopes, Lilah MacCarthy and Dorothy Richardson. For example, a letter from Moura Budberg, with whom Wells had a long-standing affair, which announces that she is pregnant by him and about to have an abortion, reveals how an advocate of birth control is himself caught out. Wells also enjoyed correspondence with the press, particularly during the two World Wars, and with various BBC officials and people who worked on his films. Some of his letters on the controversies of free love, socialism, birth control, the Fabian Society, and the nature of the curriculum of the new London University in the 1890s are included. Interspersed chronologically with Wells's letters is a small selection of about 40 letters to Wells, where letters from him are not extant. Among these are letters from Ray Lankester, Joseph Conrad, C.G. Jung, Trotsky, Hedy Gatternigg (the woman who attempted suicide in Wells's flat), and J.C. Smuts. The letters are arranged in these periods: Volume 1 1878–1900; Volume 2 1901–1912; Volume 3 1913–1930; and Volume 4 1930–1946. H.G. Wells's works include The Time Machine (1895), The Invisible Man (1897), The War of the Worlds (1898), The History of Mr Polly (1910), and A Short History of the World (1922).

Originally published in 1919, this early work by legendary English author H. G. Wells is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. Its 667 pages contain a wealth of information on the history of humanity and include chapters on The First Civilisations, The Languages of Mankind, The Greeks and the Persians and much more. This ambitious and fascinating work was written by Wells in response to the poor textbooks of his time and is thoroughly recommended for those interested in the history of Man. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

The H. G. Wells Collection includes five novels; The Time Machine, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The Invisible Man, The War of the Worlds, and The First Men in the Moon. This set is limited to 1000 copies. H. G. Wells is credited with the popularisation of time travel in 1895 with The Time Machine, introducing the idea of time being the "fourth dimension" a decade before the publication of Einstein's first Relativity papers. In 1896, he imagined a mad scientist creating human-like beings from animals in The Island of Doctor Moreau, which created a growing interest in animal welfare throughout Europe. In 1897 with The Invisible Man, Wells shows how a formula could render one invisible, recognizing that an invisible eye would not be able to focus, thus rendering the invisible man blind. With The War of the Worlds in 1898, Wells established the idea that an advanced civilization could live on Mars, popularising the term 'martian' and the idea that aliens could invade Earth. With The First Men in the Moon, Wells developed antigravity, a development that we are still dreaming about to this day.

Given to extreme violence by nature, he becomes a stalking deadly horror. 'The War of the Worlds' (1897) tells the story of a Martian invasion of Earth in which giant tripod fighting machines wreak death and destruction on England. The tentacled Martians appear to be totally undefeatable by humans, but fall prey to common bacteria to which they have no immunity.
