This book attempts to discuss the situation of the Nubi Community in Eastern Africa, which is considered as a unique phenomenon in the region. Their history of migration goes back to the late 1823, during the Anglo-Egyptian colonial rule in Sudan. They were at first reflected as Slaves and recruited as soldiers, guards, and porters loyal to the British crown, and later enrolled in the British King’s African Rifles’ (KAR) battalions of East Africa to safe-guard the colonial interest, and these soldiers were known as “Sudanese askaries”, recognized as formidable warriors and most faithful. Indeed, their ancestors have originated from various tribes of Sudan, particularly from the territory of southern Sudan. They had amalgamated together, and in-ter-married with the native population in their new settlement areas, and in the process these natives have to adapt the Nubi’s culture. Consequently, they created a homogeneous tribal group named Nubi. This is how they multiplied themselves with dignity in east Africa, but without inherited homeland.

Hierbei kontrastiere ich seine Geschichte und seine Sprachstrukturen mit den in Derek Bickertons „Language Bioprogram Hypothesis“ festgehaltenen Annahmen zur Struktur von Kreolsprachen. Die Diskussion über die Trennung von Kreol- und Pidginsprachen sowie die Diskussion über den Sinn einer solchen Trennung will ich an dieser Stelle nur bedingt und in Kürze aufnehmen. Die Verwendung dieser Begriffe erfolgt hier unter der vorausgesetzten Annahme, dass diese keine starren, limitierenden Einheiten sind, sondern verschiedene Stadien in der Entwicklung einer Sprache. Jedwede Wertung oder Qualifizierung einer Sprache durch die Einteilung in Pidgin oder Kreol schließt sich demnach aus. Das Nubi bezeichne ich, diversen Autoren folgend, als Kreol, da es eine stabile Gruppe von Muttersprachlern gibt. Dies entspricht besonders Owens, der betont, dass die Unterschiede zwischen dem klassischen Arabisch, den modernen Varianten des Arabisch und den Kreolformen des Arabischen zu groß sind, um als verschiedene Stadien einer einzigen Sprache betrachtet zu werden. Zunächst stelle ich kurz die Sprache vor, ehe ich mich intensiv der Geschichte dieser „Kreolsprache“ widme. Auch die unterschiedlichen Erklärungen zur Herleitung des Namen Nubi/ Kinubi werden hier mit einbezogen. An dieser Stelle bot es sich auch an, einige der Theorien über die Entstehung der Sprache und ihre Wurzeln einzubinden. Dem Abriss der Geschichte wird dann eine direkte Gegenüberstellung der Strukturen des Nubi mit einzelnen Aspekten der Theorie Bickertons folgen. Anschließend stelle ich meine Schlussfolgerungen aus der Geschichte des Nubi und dem Vergleich seiner Strukturen mit Derek Bickertons Thesen zum Sprachbioprogramm vor. Auf den vorherigen Erkenntnissen basierend folgt hier das Fazit zur Frage, ob sich das Nubi in Bickertons Theorie einbinden lässt. Dabei widme ich mich auch der heutigen Situation der Sprache und der Sprecher eingehend. Die verschiedenen Annahmen zur zukünftigen Entwicklung des Nubi finden hier ebenfalls Raum.
