Time Is Up In a far-flung universe--where history is a timeshaft away--a manhunt begins to determine the future of a world.... Oskar DeSilvo was the founder of the planet Solace. As the director of its terraforming project, he literally made the world--but he’s been dead for over a hundred years. Or so Anton Koffield thought. Now, as Solace slides into ecological collapse, Koffield discovers that DeSilvo may still somehow be alive--and that the secrets he holds could save not only Solace but all of humanity. But Koffield has his own reasons to find DeSilvo. Once a decorated officer of the Chronologic Patrol, he now battles against all they stand for to find the man who nearly destroyed him. Driven by a ruthless sense of justice and honor, Koffield takes his crew back through a timeshaft wormhole to a time and a place none of them have ever seen: Earth of the next century. There the search begins. A quest not only to explore the past--but to free the future from the clutches of a genocidal madman.... From the Paperback edition.

There must be a greater power than all of us. In 1607, an Indian named Squanto was kidnapped from his village. He was taken across the ocean, where he lived with a monk name, Brother Daniel, for fourteen years. His dealings with the monks, learning a new way of life, enabled him to change his outlook on life. Squanto learned the sensitivity of being tactful and sympathetic to others. While Squanto was with Brother Daniel, he met William Bradford and John Carver while staying at the monastery. He escaped to a ship, going back to America in time to meet with the Pilgrims there. In 1608, four hundred English Protestants were exiled to Leiden, Holland. Dissatisfied with the Church of England, they had hopes of reaching the promised land. The reason for coming to America was not for religious freedom but religious persecution.William Bradford (the colonies' governor) wrote, "Advancing the kingdom of Christ to a new part of the world."Squanto found his village wiped out from disease, leaving the huts empty. He suggested the Pilgrims occupy them that first winter; only forty-two Pilgrims survived out of 102.When the Pilgrims landed in America, the Indians began to squabble between each other. Acting as a go-between as tempers escalated, Squanto was quoted as saying: "We live on the same earth." "We live under the same moon." "We breathe the same air." "Why can't we get along?" For the next fifty years, harmony existed between the settlers and the Indians.

Excerpt from Life on the Ocean, or Twenty Years at Sea: Being the Personal Adventures of the Author The reader will perceive that, in the narrative itself, as well as in the dialogues introduced, the author has preserved the maritime technicalities, and rough mode of expression, peculiar to sailors; his chief object, in fact, has been to exhibit a true picture of life on the ocean, blending with it those wholesome moral and religious truths, which should be inculcated upon the minds of seamen. That it may more forcibly serve as a mirror for his brother tars, wherein they may view their defects as well as their excellences; that a fresh impulse may be given to the efforts of the Christian community H1 behalf of the spiritual wants of those who go down to the sea in ships; and that it may prove a source of recreation and (he humbly trusts) of instruction to all who may honor him by classing themselves among his readers, is the sincere desire of the author. From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Monster Calls comes a richly illustrated and lyrical tale, one that asks harrowing questions about power, loyalty, obsession, and the monsters we make of others. With harpoons strapped to their backs, the proud whales of Bathsheba's pod live for the hunt, fighting in the ongoing war against the world of men. When they attack a ship bobbing on the surface of the Abyss, they expect to find easy prey. Instead, they find the trail of a myth, a monster, perhaps the devil himself... As their relentless Captain leads the chase, they embark on a final, vengeful hunt, one that will forever change the worlds of both whales and men. With the lush, atmospheric art of Rovina Cai woven in throughout, this remarkable work by Patrick Ness turns the familiar tale of Moby Dick upside down and tells a story all its own with epic triumph and devastating fate.
