Excerpt from The Old and New Monongahela From different sources amid the mountains of West Vir ginia the Monongahela River arises, and running in a northerly direction at Pittsburgh, in Pennsylvania, it joins the Allegheny to form the Ohio. It is situated principally between 451° and 42° north latitude and in the 89° degree of longitude west of Greenwich. Its water flows gently from pure mountain springs and in its course to the mouth fails to gather the malaria] poison. The valley for the most part is bordered with moder ately high mountains and hills which abound in every variety of minerals, timber, and especially in bituminous coal, petro leum and natural gas. The coal formation susceptible of being mined is estimated at 400 square miles. Petroleum and nat ural gas are of recent discovery and their development into practical use of very modern date and limited extent. The soil of the valley is rich in fertility and capable of producing grain and vegetation of almost every variety. The forests originally abounded in chestnut, pine, cedar, oaks, maple, ash, walnut, hickory, poplar, beech, but of late years timber has been literally wasted to make lumber and obtain space for the productions in agriculture. Excerpt from The Monongahela of Old: Or Historical Sketches of South-Western Pennsylvania to the Year 1800 Judge Veech was a high minded gentleman of the old school; his dignified manner and profound legal ability commanded the respect of all. He retired from active life in 1872, and spent his later years in the congenial pursuits of history and literature in which he ac quired fame. In later years he made his home at Emsworth, on the Ohio river, six miles below Pittsburgh, on the Ft. Wayne road, where he died December 11, 1879, and his death was the occasion of marked sor row and respect of the bar and public of Pittsburg as well as his many friends in. Uniontown. He was buried in Union cemetery at Uniontown. He was survived by his wife and five daughters. His only son, David Henry Veech, having died in 1874, leaving a son, James Veech. This last named was an only son back through five generations, viz: James, of David Henry, of James, of David, of James. He has been stockholder and director in many of the industrial enterprises in Fairmont, Marion and other counties, and says as a rule he has lost money in the investments made in other states, but has never lost money on an investment in Marion county. His natural dignified simplicity and cordiality of manner has won and held hosts of friends, making him welcome wherever he goes. Governor Fleming is a man of medium stature, and has been hearty and vigorous all his life, taking no vacations from his work, but about five years ago his doctor prescribed a vacation on account of his health, and he traveled several months abroad; but since his return he has fol lowed the advice of his old physician (as often as he could think of it) who directed him to work when he felt like it and to quit early.
