The Old Men At The Zoo written by Angus Wilson and has been published by Faber & Faber this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-01 with Future life categories.

Set in a near future (the novel was first published in 1961 and is set in the period 1970-73), this is Angus Wilson's most allegorical novel, about a doomed attempt to set up a reserve for wild animals. Simon Carter, secretary of the London Zoo, has accepted responsibility and power to the prejudice of his gifts as a naturalist. But power is more than just the complicated game played by the old men at the zoo in the satirical first half of this novel: it lies very near to violence, and in the second half real life inexorably turns to fantasy - the fantasy of war. This tense and at times brutal story offers the healing relationship between man and the natural world as a solution for the power dilemma.

Real Toads In Imaginary Gardens written by Maureen Whitebrook and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with Literary Criticism categories.

Maureen Whitebrook argues that literature, through both its form and its content, can expose and criticize liberal theory and point beyond it to a new political theory. She describes how 'literary political criticism' might be done, and demonstrates such criticism in four essays that expose the connections between specific political and literary texts. Fiction, Whitebrook concludes, does a better job than liberal political theory of examining the relationship between the individual and the State.

From live productions of the 1950s like Requiem for a Heavyweight to big budget mini-series like Band of Brothers, long-form television programs have been helmed by some of the most creative and accomplished names in directing. Encyclopedia of Television Film Directors brings attention to the directors of these productions, citing every director of stand alone long-form television programs: made for TV movies, movie-length pilots, mini-series, and feature-length anthology programs, as well as drama, comedy, and musical specials of more than 60 minutes. Each of the nearly 2,000 entries provides a brief career sketch of the director, his or her notable works, awards, and a filmography. Many entries also provide brief discussions of key shows, movies, and other productions. Appendixes include Emmy Awards, DGA Awards, and other accolades, as well as a list of anthology programs. A much-needed reference that celebrates these often-neglected artists, Encyclopedia of Television Film Directors is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the history of the medium.

Faced with the demise of their country on the world stage, with the Americanization of their society and with the prospect of integration into Europe, many people in postwar-Britain, and in particular in England, began to look more closely at their national identity. Using literature as a source material, this study investigates postwar images of Englishness as they are defined in relation not only to ‘Americans’ and ‘Europeans’, but also to other foreigners: the ‘Arabs’ and the ‘Russians.’ In the context of the Anglo-American novel particular regard is given to Englishness in Evelyn Waugh’s The Loved One and David Lodge’s Changing Places. Subsequently the book focuses on that peculiarly English genre ‘the invasion story’, tales in which Englishness comes under direct attack from evil plotters from abroad. While the history of the genre is discussed at some length, detailed attention is paid to images of Englishness in Angus Wilson’s The Old Men at the Zoo (united European forces invade a Euro-recalcitrant Britain), Anthony Burgess’ 1985 (Arab infiltrators prepare to Islamize the English) and Kingsley Amis’ Russian Hide and Seek (after a period of occupation the Russians attempt to give the English back their Englishness).
