Excerpt from The Old Testament Under Fire A second lesson which I have learned is that while the present problems of the Old Testament are perfectly legitimate, their satisfactory solution is something which need not be looked for. No new Bible will be the out come. Agreed as most critics are as to the quartet of documents in the Hexateuch, they are not sure of their original form and contents. Not one of them, we are told, exists in its original integrity and completeness. The Redactor has scissored them all. Not only are there four imperfect documents, but each document has been compiled from many sources, which is declared to be pre-eminently true of the Priest-code. Nor are the critics agreed as to the date and the relative antiquity of the documents. The older scholars placed the Elohist first, but the present school makes him the last in the line; and the inversion compels the claim that the poem of creation is an introduction to Genesis added by the la test of the great unknown four or by their editor. Excerpt from The Fire of God's Anger: Or, Light From the Old Testament Upon the New Testament Teaching Concerning Future Punishment This book is a series of Bible studies, from a new point of view, of the burning question of future punish ment. Its author has served for many years in the min istry of the Presbyterian Church. No other church stands more in need of a free discussion of the vital questions raised in this volume. He has herein asserted, both for himself and for his brethren, the right to inquire into matters about which he knows many of the minis ters and members of that church are profoundly exer cised, but concerning which many of them believe they are bound to keep silent. He cannot, for a moment, ac cept that low idea of the church which makes it a merely voluntary association, formed in the interests of a certain system of doctrine. It is a living body, formed for growth in knowledge and purity. And to such increase each member is bound to contribute as God may give him light and Opportunity. This carries with it the right, and just at this time of excited interest on this subject imposes the duty, to reverently investigate the matters treated of in this volume. The author can render no higher service to his own church than to assert within her, and for her, this principle of liberty. Excerpt from The Shorter Bible: The Old Testament I3iler Duff, first missionary of the (established) Church of Scot land to India, and an acknowledged primns inter pares among all missionaries, confessed this of himself until the horrors of the Indian mutiny Opened his eyes to the need of naked piti less justice at some crucial epochs. He must be blind who cannot perceive that since 1914, Almighty God has been writ ing his Commentaries on the Imprecatory Psalms in letters of blood and fire on the face of Europe, and not only on such Psalms as these but on those deep strains in both Testaments which magnify his just and holy Law and its terrors and threatenings. The Shorter Bible, like the modern mind that produced it, betrays the sentimental aversion for Mt. Sinai and what it stands for, which includes the Anathema of the first great missionary Apostle, on men or angels who per vert the gospel and wrest the Scriptures. They likewise have forgotten the Dies [me and the wrath of the Lamb in the Apocalypse. Such Psalms as these are quite intelligible when read in the light of David's life, the man after God's own heart, in spite of his sins; the anointed executioner of divine justice on guilty men and nations; not out of personal malice to his enemies, as his behavior to Saul and his grief over Ab salom show. But all who gird at Old Testament proclama tions of divine judgments will like the Shorter Bible for that very reason. What the Old Testament needs is not shorten ing, but italicising, not abbreviation, but emphasis. Our Lord Jesus Christ selected the 110th Psalm for especial em phasis, arguing out of it with the Pharisees about his own claims, - How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David? The Shorter New Testament rejects this by omitting the entire chapter in Matthew and again in Luke in which it occurs, and by slicing deftly out of Mark the verses in which it is found, though this requires the cutting of a verse in two. Now the Shorter Old Testament omits the whole Psalm, in the face of Christ's own solemn asservation, in Mark (whom the critics think the more reliable), For David himself said by the Holy Ghost. Thus both Testaments are stripped bare of this witness of Christ, and of the Holy Ghost to his Divine Sonship. Can the Christian churches sit silent and see their Lord thus wounded in the house of his friends? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Excerpt from The Old Testament Story: Retold for Young People The Bible tells us the story of the Jews and of Jesus Christ. All the Old Testament and almost all the New were written by Jews, and Jesus Christ was born a Jew. The history of the Jews is part of the story of Jesus Christ, because it explains how God prepared the way for Christ; how the teaching of the prophets helped men to understand the words of Christ; and how wealth and poverty, victory and defeat, imperial power and shameful slavery, alike fashioned the Jews to be kinsfolk of the Saviour of the world.
