Excerpt from The Oliver-Sharpey Lectures on the Feeding of Nations: A Study in Applied Physiology When the council of the Royal College of Physicians honoured me with an invitation to deliver the Oliver-Sharpey Lectures, I was entirely absorbed, as Chairman of the Royal Society Food (War) Committee and as Scientific Adviser to the Food Ministry, in the scientific aspects of the national food supply. The still larger aspect of the same subject - viz. the apportionment of the available world supplies among the allied countries - was brought to my notice by my co-operation, as British Delegate, in the labours of the Inter-allied Scientific Food Commission. At that time the provision of food for the ensuing year, both for ourselves and for our allies, seemed very precarious, and likely to demand the utmost care, co-operation, and forethought, if the fighting powers of the Allies were to be maintained at their highest efficiency.
