The orbit method influenced the development of several areas of mathematics in the second half of the 20th century and remains a useful and powerful tool in such areas as Lie theory, representation theory, integrable systems, complex geometry, and mathematical physics. Among the distinguished names associated with the orbit method is that of A.A. Kirillov, whose pioneering paper on nilpotent orbits (1962), places him as the founder of orbit theory. The original research papers in this volume are written by prominent mathematicians and reflect recent achievements in orbit theory and other closely related areas such as harmonic analysis, classical representation theory, Lie superalgebras, Poisson geometry, and quantization. Contributors: A. Alekseev, J. Alev, V. Baranovksy, R. Brylinski, J. Dixmier, S. Evens, D.R. Farkas, V. Ginzburg, V. Gorbounov, P. Grozman, E. Gutkin, A. Joseph, D. Kazhdan, A.A. Kirillov, B. The work will be an invaluable reference for researchers in the above mentioned fields, as well as a useful text for graduate seminars and courses.

Ever since its introduction around 1960 by Kirillov, the orbit method has played a major role in representation theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras. This book contains the proceedings of a conference held from August 29 to September 2, 1988, at the University of Copenhagen, about "the orbit method in representation theory." It contains ten articles, most of which are original research papers, by well-known mathematicians in the field, and it reflects the fact that the orbit method plays an important role in the representation theory of semisimple Lie groups, solvable Lie groups, and even more general Lie groups, and also in the theory of enveloping algebras.

This book is an expanded version of the lectures given at the Nankai Mathematical Summer School in 1997. It provides an introduction to Lie groups, Lie algebras and their representations as well as introduces some directions of current research for graduate students who have little specialized knowledge in representation theory. It only assumes that the reader has a good knowledge of linear algebra and some basic knowledge of abstract algebra.Parts I-III of the book cover the relatively elementary material of representation theory of finite groups, simple Lie algebras and compact Lie groups. These theories are natural continuation of linear algebra. The last chapter of Part III includes some recent results on extension of Weyl's construction to exceptional groups. Part IV covers some advanced material on infinite-dimensional representations of non-compact groups such as the orbit method, minimal representations and dual pair correspondences, which introduces some directions of the current research in representation theory.

This monograph adopts an operational and functional analytic approach to the following problem: given a short exact sequence (group extension) 1 → N → G → H → 1 of finite groups, describe the irreducible representations of G by means of the structure of the group extension. This problem has attracted many mathematicians, including I. Schur, A.H. Clifford, and G. Mackey and, more recently, M. Isaacs, B. Huppert, Y.G. Berkovich & E.M. Zhmud, and J.M.G. Fell & R.S. Doran. The main topics are, on the one hand, Clifford Theory and the Little Group Method (of Mackey and Wigner) for induced representations, and, on the other hand, Kirillov’s Orbit Method (for step-2 nilpotent groups of odd order) which establishes a natural and powerful correspondence between Lie rings and nilpotent groups. As an application, a detailed description is given of the representation theory of the alternating groups, of metacyclic, quaternionic, dihedral groups, and of the (finite) Heisenberg group. The Little Group Method may be applied if and only if a suitable unitary 2-cocycle (the Mackey obstruction) is trivial. To overcome this obstacle, (unitary) projective representations are introduced and corresponding Mackey and Clifford theories are developed. The commutant of an induced representation and the relative Hecke algebra is also examined. Finally, there is a comprehensive exposition of the theory of projective representations for finite Abelian groups which is applied to obtain a complete description of the irreducible representations of finite metabelian groups of odd order.

The purpose of the book is to discuss the latest advances in the theory of unitary representations and harmonic analysis for solvable Lie groups. The orbit method created by Kirillov is the most powerful tool to build the ground frame of these theories. Many problems are studied in the nilpotent case, but several obstacles arise when encompassing exponentially solvable settings. The book offers the most recent solutions to a number of open questions that arose over the last decades, presents the newest related results, and offers an alluring platform for progressing in this research area. The book is unique in the literature for which the readership extends to graduate students, researchers, and beginners in the fields of harmonic analysis on solvable homogeneous spaces.

Isaac Newton encrypted his discoveries in analysis in the form of an anagram, which deciphers to the sentence ``It is worthwhile to solve differential equations''. Accordingly, one can express the main idea behind the Orbit Method by saying "It is worthwhile to study coadjoint orbits". The orbit method was introduced by the author, A. A. Kirillov, in the 1960s and remains a useful and powerful tool in areas such as Lie theory, group representations, integrable systems, complex and symplectic geometry, and mathematical physics. This book describes the essence of the orbit method for non-experts and gives the first systematic, detailed, and self-contained exposition of the method. It starts with a convenient ``User's Guide'' and contains numerous examples. It can be used as a text for a graduate course, as well as a handbook for non-experts and a reference book for research mathematicians and mathematical physicists.
