In the United States, teenagers can focus on one task for only sixty-five seconds at a time, and office workers average only three minutes. People worldwide are reporting increased difficulty paying attention to deep ideas and ordinary tasks. Though it's impossible to precisely quantify, copious circumstantial evidence reports that populations don't stick with ideas as long as we once did, and while customers are buying more books than ever, they're finishing far, far fewer. How did this happen to so many people simultaneously? Just as important, how can we reverse it? Disorder and instability are matters of continuing public concern. Terrorism, as a threat to global order, has been added to preoccupations with political unrest, deviance and crime. Such considerations have prompted the return to the classic anthropological issues of order and disorder. Examining order within the political and legal spheres and in contrasting local settings, the papers in this volume highlight its complex and contested nature. Elaborate displays of order seem necessary to legitimate the institutionalization of violence by military and legal establishments, yet violent behaviour can be incorporated into the social order by the development of boundaries, rituals and established processes of conflict resolution. Order is said to depend upon justice, yet injustice legitimates disruptive protest. Case studies from Siberia, India, Indonesia, Tibet, West Africa, Morocco and the Ottoman Empire show that local responses are often inconsistent in their valorization, acceptance and condemnation of disorder.

The thoroughly revised second edition of Care of the Mentally Disordered Offender in the Community is a comprehensive, evidence-based guide to the latest developments in the social context, management, and treatment of offenders in mental health care. In recent years there has been significant changes in the public perception of crime and the mentally ill offender, enhanced by research into causal links between violence and mental illness, and the increased publicity of the risk mentally disordered offenders could pose to the community. These, and other various factors, have significantly increased service development and research into psychological and pharmacological treatments and the rate of re-offending. Over three sections this essential guide explores key topics for discussion in the field. Part One critically examines the social, administrative and clinical context within which care is given in the modern day. Part Two discusses treatment and the evaluation of risk when determining the most appropriate treatment, whilst Part Three explores psychiatric services and their relationship with other agencies. Fully updated to ensure new areas for discussion are included, this book includes new chapters on relevant debates in the field such as US provision for the mentally disordered leaving prison, community management of sexual offending, the relationships between care and coercion, and the treatment of personality disorders. Written and edited by a global team of experts in the field, this book provides readers with useful insight into the social, clinical, and institutional contexts of this complex and relevant issue.

Contaminations written by Mack Michael Mack and has been published by Edinburgh University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-02-02 with Literary Criticism categories.

Introduces the figure of contamination as alternative to dialectics Whereas dialectics separates two entities and traverses from one to the other (finally negating negation), contamination allows for the simultaneous interdependence of what has previously been conceived as separate or opposed. The book enquires into the problem of various oppositions between pure entities such as nature and society, body and mind, science and the arts, subjectivity and objectivity, action and contemplation, the sacred and the profane. It examines how works of literature and cinema have contaminated constructions of the pure and the immune with their purported opposite. As an advanced critical introduction to the figure of contamination, the book makes explicit what so far has remained unarticulated-what has only been implied-within postmodern and poststructuralist, and deconstructive theory.Combining theory with literary criticism, the book sheds light on how overlooked aspects of Henry James's , H. Melville's and H. G. Wells's novels question notions of natural order as well as an opposition between the subjective and the objective. It offers fresh readings of classic films and literary texts, including Vertigo and Moby Dick, with the aim to ground theoretical insights in close analysis. Key featuresCritically engages with some aspects of contemporary theory that keep propounding a Cartesian notion of the mind's control over the bodyAnalyses how key thinkers such as Spinoza, Benjamin, Pasolini and Freud attempt to re-evaluate what Agamben calls 'bare life'Offers original readings of Pasolini's notion of scandalo in terms of contaminationAlerts us to the ways in which some aspects of contemporary posthumanism may merely reproduce the dialects of inclusion and exclusion which is still premised on traditional notions of purity and immunity

Moral Order And Social Disorder written by Frank Hearn and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-29 with Social Science categories.

Drawing upon both classical insights and more recent writings, Hearn provides a compelling account of social breakdown in the United States. The book examines the conditions most responsible for the deterioration of social institutions, notably the family, and of communitarian interdependencies, such as those that support neighborhoods. More specifically, Hearn analyzes the defining forces of liberal modernity--among them, especially, the market economy (favored by the political right) and the democratic welfare state (endorsed by the political left)--whose steady expansion has diminished the social contexts that nurture trust, mutuality, and a robust sense of both personal responsibility and social obligation. The originality of Hearn's book lies in the solutions he proposes, which differ from those rooted in what Hearn calls ""the languages of modernity."" Hearn advocates modes that would serve instead to renew solidarity and reclaim social virtue, a repertory of strategies that would answer Emile Durkheim's call for the creation of moral individualism. He assesses various approaches to revitalizing the social settings, the social institutions, and communitarian structures within which people become moral individuals capable of care about and taking responsibility for the fates of others. Readers of this book are invited to draw their own conclusions by relying in larger part on themselves as parents, neighbors, community members, and citizen-participants in a civil society in restoration. As the American Journal of Sociology notes, ""the book succeeds in its goals, and it deserves to be widely read.""Frank Hearn was professor of sociology at the State University of New York, College of Cortland, and the author of Reason and Freedom in Sociological Thought and The Transformation of Industrial Organization.

Increasing order in a system also creates disorder: this seemingly paradoxical idea has deep roots in early cultures throughout the world, but it has been largely lost in our modern lives as we push for increasing systematization in our world and in our personal lives. Drawing on nearly five decades of research as well as forty-five years working as a psychoanalyst, Nathan Schwartz-Salant explains that, in a world where vast amounts of order are being created through the growing success of science and technology, the concomitant disorder is having devastating effects upon relationships, society, and the environment. As a Jungian analyst with training in the physical sciences, Schwartz-Salant is uniquely qualified to explore scientific conceptions of energy, information, and entropy alongside their mythical antecedents. He analyzes the possible effects of created disorder, including its negative consequences for the creator of the preceding order as well as its potentially transformative functions. With many examples of the interaction of order and disorder in everyday life and psychotherapy, The Order-Disorder Paradox makes new inroads into our understanding of the wide-ranging consequences of the order we create and its effects on others and the environment.
