Excerpt from The Organ of the Twentieth Century: A Manual on All Matters Relating to the Science and Art Organ Tonal Apportionment and Divisional Apportionment With Compound Expression Since the year 1865 my interest in all matters connected with the construction and tonal appointment of the Organ has been deep and never-flagging. Fostered during the years in which my chief and almost only amusement was the construction of an Organ: and throughout the years in which my frequent travels in Continental countries were enriched by the inspection and study of notable Organs, - landmarks in the history of organ-building, - and made pleasant and profitable by acquaintanceship and communion with many distinguished masters of the art. my love for the Organ and the many problems its construction and tonal development presented grew steadily; until, with the exception of the imperative calls of my exacting profession, the study of the Organ as a musical instrument, with its seemingly infinite possibilities of scientific and artistic development, became the most absorbing one to my mind. Under such circumstances it was only natural that I should take up pen and pencil to add something, however humble, to the literature of the Organ; especially at a time when so little of any real value was being said, and so little indicative of scientific and artistic advance was making its appearance in the organ-building world.
