Excerpt from Antique Rugs From the Near East The interest thus awakened in Oriental rugs and the growing delight in colorful interior decoration, soon brought the attention of the antique trade to truly old specimens. These appeared in different places in the Orient itself, particularly in Turkey and several adjacent countries, and also in Italy, Spain and Portugal. Even earlier, silk carpets were eagerly purchased by several wealthy collectors who laid especial emphasis upon the magnificent and artistic furnishing of their houses. Other rugs, whid1 had usually been discarded by churches and palaces because of their more or less damaged condition; could be secured very dieaply in Spain, southern Germany and especially in Italy. These were gladly purchased by various museums and by artists who used them in furnishing their studios. Thus scholars gradually became interested in Oriental rugs and began to study them, though only incidentally and with hesitation. It became evident that the very numerous specimens which dealers brought to Europe from the East were almost all modern. But on the other hand, old paintings frequently bore reproductions of rugs which were identical with a few in the antique trade. Then the philologists began to study the inscriptions whid1 appeared in many rugs. Such material, as well as existent information from historical sources, were used for the determination of age. The comparison of the decoration of rugs with that of ardiitecture, metal work, pottery, textiles and other manifestations of Oriental art, gave further indi cations. On the other hand, modern rugs made in the different regions of the Near East and Central Asia were used to determine the origin of the antique specimens. This method was especially popular among the large _rug dealers who did buying and manufacturing in those regions. Several exhibitions and subsequent publications particularly furthered the understanding and interest in Oriental rugs-above all, the great Vienna Rug Exhibition of 1891, followed by the important publication devoted to this exhibition and by a supplementary volume in 1907. In 1908 Martin's history of Oriental carpets appeared and finally in 1911 came the publication on the Mohammadan exhibition in Munich. This monumental reference work—long awaited by collectors and scholars—fills an important gap in the available literature on oriental rugs. Lavishly illustrated with over 1000 photographs and drawings, it offers clear and precise definitions for the rug and textile terms in use across a broad swath of the globe—from Morocco to Turkey, Persia, the Caucasus region, Central Asia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and China. Covering priceless museum-quality rug traditions as well as modern centers of production, Oriental Rugs: An Illustrated Lexicon of Motifs, Materials, and Origins draws on classical scholarship as well as current terminology in use among producers and traders in these areas today. It focuses primarily on the rich hand-knotting and hand-weaving traditions of the Near East and Central Asia, but also includes some examples of Scandinavian and Native American weavings. Oriental rugs are receiving ever-increasing attention and recognition in the field of art history. Tribal weavings especially have become a focus for new research, and Oriental Rugs provides a new understanding of many distinctive traditions that were previously understudied, such as the weavings of southwest Persia, Baluchistan and Kurdistan. This concise oriental rug reference book is a must-have for scholars and anyone serious about collecting rugs, selling rugs or the rug trade in general. Additional reference information also includes: Foreign terms Place names The Oriental Rug lexicon Museums with notable rug collections Oriental rug internet sites

Out Of The Stream written by Luís Urbano Afonso and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-02-19 with Art categories.

The subject of this book arises from recent developments in the inventory, preservation and study of mural paintings from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, particularly those from what can be considered the periphery of Europe. The aim of this book is to demonstrate the vitality that the study of wall painting in peripheral regions can bring to the discipline of Art History. The articles collected in this book are overwhelmingly about wall paintings that would be hard pressed to be considered part of the master narrative of Art History. They are studies regarding regions and themes that are rarely present in the mainstream of the discipline, but their common thread is their focus on the functional dimension of mural paintings and on the complex interrelation between image, audience, social context and everyday life. From Denmark to Portugal, from graffiti to secular painting, from the orthodox monasteries of Moldavia to the noble residences of Tirol, from Giotto to anonymous and sometimes almost amateur painters, the studies gathered in this book place very distinct artistic realities side by side offering complementary perspectives and insights. The book will make a valuable contribution to the literature on Medieval and Renaissance mural painting, combining theoretical essays with others more descriptive. As the eighteen studies collected in this book deal with paintings from a range of European regions, from Denmark to Portugal and Romania, the book will find its way in Europe and abroad, both in the field of art history and that of Medieval and Early Modern history. The wealth of plates and figures will make the book also accessible to a broad audience interested in the history of painting, architecture and cultural heritage.
