Japanese economists began publishing scientific papers in renowned journals including Econometrica in the 1950s and had made their significant contributions to the sophistication of general equilibrium analysis by intensive use of a variety of mathematical instruments. They had contributed significantly to the transformation of neoclassical economics. This book examines how it became possible for Japanese economists to do so by shedding light on the "professional" discussion of the international gold standard and parity policies in the early twentieth century, the acceptance of "mathematical economics" in the following period, the impact of establishment of the Econometric Society (1930), and the swift distribution of theory-oriented economics journals since 1930. This book also includes topics on the historical research of the Japanese foundations of modern economics, the transformation of the economics of Keynes into Keynesian economics, Japanese developments in econometrics, and Martin Bronfenbrenner's visit to Japan in the post-WWII period. This book provides insight into the economic research done by Japanese scholars in the international context. It traces how, during the period 1900-1960, economics was harmonized with economics and a standard economics was re-shaped on the basis of mathematics thanks to economists' appetite for rigor and will help to contribute to existing literature.

Among the many books on why some nations prosper better than others, this is the first such focusing this theme on Japan in many years. And it is the first in English to show how a revival of Japan's past entrepreneurship will promote broader economic recovery, and written in a lively style, this book will appeal to laypersons, scholars, businesspeople, and policymakers alike. Adding to the appeal is that the book demonstrates how current trends give Japan its best opportunity for recovery in a generation. At the same time, its discussion of the forces opposing an entrepreneurial revival adds both realism and drama. There truly is a contest of forces for control of Japan's economic future. On top of that, the book will attract those interested in broader themes ranging from generational attitudes and gender relations to culture and technology.

Japan will recover and its economic achievements will once again earn the world's admiration, with sustained annual growth of three percent, perhaps more, well within reach. This is the confident forecast that begins Japanese Phoenix: The Long Road to Economic Revival by the author of Japan: The System That Soured, which several years ago accurately predicted Japan's current travails at a time when others were prematurely pronouncing full recovery. Katz warns however that there is bad news to go with the good. So deep-seated are Japan's dysfunctions that, even if it did everything right today, it would take at least five years for truly vibrant growth to take hold. But Japan will not do everything right. Opposition to reform is deep-seated and a myriad of vested interests and millions of jobs are at stake. Still he notes, there is little doubt that reform will succeed. Japanese Phoenix tells the story of the struggle between the forces of reform and the forces of resistance. It dissects Prime Minister Koizumi's role in the process, and explains why Japan is in so much trouble and what needs to be done. It explore the debates among economists and gives a careful progress report on all the moves made so far in the name of reform - from greater direct foreign investment, to the financial "Big Bang", to ending one-party rule by the Liberal Democratic Party. Katz concludes that this is just the second round of a 15-round fight. Japan is a great nation currently trapped in obsolete institutions. As it has before, Japan will find a way to surmount its problems and regain its forward progress.

Japan's remarkable penetration into foreign markets in industries ranging from automobiles to semiconductors has fueled great interest in Japanese foreign investment. Japan now exerts tremendous influence over the international economy. Backed by statistics and theory, this definitive work examines Japanese direct foreign investments around the world and across various industries since World War II. It explores Japan's overseas acquisitions in all corners of the globe, the internationalization of its financial services industry and the roots of its foreign investment including the rebuilding of its economy after World War II and its success in technological domination of key industries. The study begins with a general theoretical and historical overview of Japanese overseas investment. It then focuses on individual regions and countries in the world including the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Ocean region. Particular attention is addressed to the United States and Southeast Asia, the areas where most of Japan's overseas investments are concentrated. This work will be of interest to economists, businessmen, historians, scholars, and students of international business or economics. Businessmen and economists will find this book especially valuable with its leads on Japanese economic and corporate success.
