The existence of an Indo-European linguistic family, allowing for the fact that several languages widely dispersed across Eurasia share numerous traits, has been demonstrated for several centuries now. But the underlying factors for this shared heritage have been fiercely debated by linguists, historians, archaeologists, and anthropologists. The leading theory, of which countless variations exist, argues that this similarity is best explained by the existence, at one given point in time and space, of a common language and corresponding population. This ancient, prehistoric, population would then have diffused across Eurasia, eventually leading to the variation observed in historical and modern times. The Indo-Europeans: Archaeology, Language, Race, and the Search for the Origins of the West argues that despite its acceptance and use by most researchers from different disciplines, such a model is inherently flawed. This book describes how, beginning in the late eighteenth century, Europeans began a quest for a supposed original homeland, from which a small conquering people would one day spread out, bringing their language to Europe and parts of Asia (India, Iran, Afghanistan). This quest was often closely tied to ideological preoccupations and it was in its name that the Nazi leadership, claiming for the Germans the status of the purest Indo-Europeans (or Aryans), waged genocide. The last part of the book summarizes the current state of knowledge and current hypotheses in the fields of linguistics, archaeology, comparative mythology, and genetics. The culmination of three decades of research, this book offers a sweeping survey of the historiography of the Indo-European debate and poses a devastating challenge to the Indo-European origin story at its roots.

A beautifully-written cultural history of the Indo-European peoples. The author, a classical scholar, defines "Aryan" as a "linguistic race" spanning the areas occupied by the great Indi-European invasion, reaching from India to Ireland, and proceeds to analyze all aspects of the cultures across this vast region. Along the way, he proves that the broad family of Indo-European language speakers had a common origin at some distant point in the past. It includes an overview of the development of ancient Indo-European households, farming arrangements, legal systems, culture, religion, language and political development. Read of the tales from the Rig-Vedas, their similarity to the Greek and Roman myths, and the parallels with the Norse Edda and even Cúchulainn in Ireland. It is a treasure-trove of facts, myths and storytelling which reflects the collective genius of the Indo-European people across the centuries. The last chapter is a prognosis of future racial development. Written in a time of unparalleled European supremacy over the world, the author's predictions have been completely reversed by events, but even in the confidence of his claims, is a lesson well worth learning: the futility of "white supremacy" and the understanding that the only path to racial preservation lies in physical geographical separation, not white rule over other races. Contents I. Types of Mankind II. The Home of the Aryans III. The Aryan Outflow IV. The Aryans At Home V. The Household and the Village VI. The Double System of Aryan Worship VII. Race Life Of The Aryan Peoples written by Joseph Pomeroy Widney and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1907 with categories.

Joseph Pomeroy Widney offers a history of the Aryan race, which when this book was published in 1907 was thought a branch of the Indo-European and Caucasian peoples. The author practiced as a medical doctor, having first gained experience during service in the U.S. Civil War. Over many years he became interested in the ancestry and development of humanity, carrying out research from the existing knowledge of his time. Widney developed a theory that successive generations of individual races developed distinguishing characteristics due to the qualities of the soil in which their food was cultivated, and the climate in which they resided. Much categorization ensues, with the author assigning Aryan groups and subgroups to various regions of the world. In the modern day, Widney's investigations have been proven incorrect. The advent of genetic science disproved the entire hypothesis of an Aryan race, with human lineage shown to have progressed in a completely different fashion. Nevertheless, this book is an illustrative historic example of how human ancestry and racial development were studied and discussed prior to rigorous scientific experiment and the resulting conclusive evidence and data.

Excerpt from Outlines of Primitive Belief Among the Indo-European Races There are two roads along which students are now travelling towards (we may reasonably hope) the same goal of fuller knowledge touching Prehistoric Belief. One way is that of Comparative Mythology, which has become so favourite a pursuit with the present generation. In this method the myth is taken for the centre-point of the enquiry, and - just as a specimen in natural history may be - it is traced through all the varieties and sub-species that are to be discovered in various lands. The other method, which is an historical rather than a scientific one, may be called the study of the History of Belief. In it our eyes are for the time being fixed upon a single race of men; and it is the relationship of these people to the world by which they are surrounded that we seek to know. The following outlines of early Aryan belief belong to the class of studies, which are distinctly historical in character. They are not designed to establish any new theory of the origin of belief among mankind; nor are they meant to deal with theories which relate to creeds other than the Indo-European.
