This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1896 edition. Excerpt: ... VII.--THE ORPHIC PANTHEON. Unaging Time. Orpheus designated the Supreme Cause, although it is in reality ineffable, Chronus (Time). This Time, and with it other ineffable Powers, was prior to Heaven, Uranus (Procl. in CraL, p. 71. Boiss.). The name Chronus closely resembles the name Cronus (Saturn), remarks Proclus (loc. cit., p. 64) suggestively; and in the same passage he says that " ' God-inspired' words Oracles characterize this divinity Cronus as Once Beyond." This may mean that Chronus is ideal Unending Duration, and Cronus Time manifested; though this leaves unexplained the strange term "Once Beyond," which is found in the Chaldsean system. The same statements are found elsewhere in Proclus' works (Tim., i. 86; Theol., i. 28, 68; Parm., vii. 230). And Philo (Quod Mund. Incorr., p. 952, b.) says: "There was once a Time when Cosmos L was not." This is called "Unborn Time, The iEon," by Timseus of Locris (p. 97). It is the "First One, the Supersubstantial, the Ineffable Principle." It may be compared to the Zeryan of the Avesta, the En Suph and Hidden of the Hidden of the Kabalah, the Bythos of the Gnostics, the Unknown Darkness of the Egyptians, and the Parabrahman of the Vedantins. Iether, Chaos And Night. Next come iEther and Chaos, Spirit-Matter, the Bound (irepas) and Infinity (dbmpio) of Plato (Proc., Tim., ii. 117), the Purusha-Prakriti of the Sankhya. Orpheus calls this-.Ether the Mighty Whirlpool--mXwpiov xp-a-(Simplicius, Ausc., iv. 123); called Magna Vorago by Syrianus Metaph., ii. 33. a). And Proclus (Tim., ii. 117), speaking of Chaos, says: "The last Infinity, by which also Matter (vXrj) is circumscribed--is the Container, the field and plane of ideas. About her is 'neither limit, nor foundation, nor seat, but excessive...

Orpheus And Greek Religion written by William Keith Guthrie and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993-10-10 with Philosophy categories.

The tales told of Orpheus are legion. He is said to have been an Argonaut--and to have saved Jason's life. Rivers are reported to have stopped their flow to listen to the sounds of his lyre and his voice. Plato cites his poetry and Herodotus refers to "practices that are called Orphic." Did Orpheus, in fact, exist? His influence on Greek thought is undeniable, but his disciples left little of substance behind them. Indeed, their Orphic precepts have been lost to time. W.K.C. Guthrie attempts to uncover and define Orphism by following its circuitous path through ancient history. He tackles this daunting task with the determination of a detective and the analytical rigor of a classical scholar. He ferries his readers with him on a singular voyage of discovery.

"Orphic Tradition and the Birth of the Gods is a literary history that attempts to reconstruct the fragments of four theogonies that were attributed to the legendary singer Orpheus: the Derveni, Eudemian, Hieronyman, and Rhapsodic Theogonies. Most modern scholars have described these poems as if they were similar to Hesiod's Theogony—lengthy chronological accounts of the births of the gods from the beginning of time to the present—but this book suggests that a better model for understanding how these poems were composed is to see each of them as an individual product of bricolage (as explained by Claude Lévi-Strauss), rather than as items in the stemma of a static manuscript tradition (as reconstructed by Martin West). The Orphic tradition was more fluid and fragmented than modern reconstructions would lead one to believe, but in these four Orphic theogonies certain features stand out, such as points of comparison with Near Eastern myths, the continuous discourse between Orphic poetry and philosophy, and speculations on the nature of the gods in ways that generated unique deities and new narratives. A study of Orphic theogonies reveals that the Orphic myths of Phanes and Zeus were no less important than the Orphic myth of Dionysus"--
