The Other Side of the Scalpel is an autobiography of Dr. Mitchell Hatheway. His childhood is typical of middle-class life in a small town. The pace picks up once he enters medical school and his behind-the curtain experiences are both hilarious and heart-breaking. Upon completion of medical school he decides to go further and specializes in surgery - another four years of grueling but fascinating work. He later develops a sterling reputation as an accomplished cancer and trauma surgeon but at the peak of his career he develops a brain tumor and is given a few months to live. Miraculously, he survives but after he gets back on his feet, his wife leaves to pursue a university education. He is unable to resume his career as a surgeon but his new role as an occupational physician provides him more time to devote to his two teenage boys who continue living with him . His story was presented as a drama that was seen by thousands of people.
