The first in a trilogy set in the untamed colonial American wilderness, from “a keen observer of the human heart as well as a fine action writer” (Publishers Weekly). Joshua Colter was born of the wild frontier. As a young boy living with his family on the edges of civilization during the French and Indian War, he witnessed firsthand the bloodshed and brutality men were capable of—from the deception and depredations of whites like his own vile father to the merciless vengeance of the native tribes. Forced by cruel fate to set out on his own, he was adopted by an honorable hunter who taught him to fight and survive while remaining true to his own heart. But as much as the solitary Joshua loves living rough and free in the forests and mountains, the troubles of the civilized world are encroaching, as the once-pristine wilderness is being carved up between the all-powerful British crown, settlers searching for a land to call their own, and the native Indians who desperately defy them both to protect their ancestral home. Now, in a burgeoning land of hope and hardship, Joshua will have to decide what he is willing to fight and die for as the birth of a new nation breaks on the horizon.

Excerpt from The Over-Mountain Men: Some Passages From a Page of Neglected History The result of this undertaking is now a part Of the annals of that period, though its full significance has not always been duly recognized. Of those 1100 men, above whom floated the British flag on the morning of October 7, 1780, not one escaped. All were killed, wounded or taken prisoners; and so unerring had been the aim Of those Bechard rifles that the killed outnumbered the wounded. Each patriot picked his man, and each shot counted its victim. Every man was his own leader, acting upon his own judgment and responsibility. This great achievement, which is regarded now as the turn of the tide in the fortunes Of war in favor Of the cause Of the colonies, was the out come Of the purest patriotism. They expected no reward for their perilous undertaking but victory. They were never en listed in any regular command, never were a part of the Conti nental army, and never received any pay for their services, Remote from the principal scenes Of action, concerned in no manner in the politics, which, then as now, was inseparable from all questions of national interest and contention, they remained quiet and unobtrusive until the time came to deal their blow, and then having dealt it with the promptness and effectiveness with which they were accustomed to doing such work, they went back to the occupations and duties which they had left momen tarily for the accomplishment of this higher one. On October 7, 1780, at King's Mountain, South Carolina, the Overmountain Men, consisting of several Colonial militia regiments, soundly and utterly defeated the renowned British Veteran, Colonel Patrick Ferguson and his army of Tory militia. None other than General George Washington described this victory as the pivotal battle, in the south, of the American Revolution. In that battle, one Colonial militia regiment suffered more than any other; The Washington County, Virginia Rangers lost 13 officers and one private. One family sacrificed more than any other; the Edmiston Family. In that extended family, out of the eight who fought, three officers were killed; and, all of the other five were wounded. This is their story.
