In this story you will encounter an old German ferry pilot, an American engineer, a long-lost aircraft, black marketeers, stolen Nazi loot, a kidnapping and the quest to rescue the hostages. The events have been written using real geographical locations. Readers with access to satellite imaging programmes can view these locations. The old USAF base Giebelstadt is now a solar farm. The base can be viewed with time lag to reveal to original dispersals for the Me 262 Jet fighters based there in 1945. There are several sand quarries in the Dresden area and the paths and the stream used by Ralph in his search for the Heide Halle can all be seen via satellite imaging. The old Russian airstrip in the Dresden Heide may or may not have been just that. Suffice to say, the airstrip-like feature south east of the quarry was the key element for the story, making the events plausible by including some knowledge about the use of mining equipment such as front-end loaders. The Soviet helicopter base was real as was the Klotsche airfield which can be seen using satellite imaging technology.

Told with vigor and insight, this is the memorable story of Wooden Leg (1858?1940), one of sixteen hundred warriors of the Northern Cheyennes who fought with the Lakotas against Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Wooden Leg remembers the world of the Cheyennes before they were forced onto reservations. He tells of growing up on the Great Plains and learning how to be a Cheyenne man. We hear from him about Cheyenne courtship, camp life, spirituality, and hunting; of skirmishes with Crows, Pawnees, and Shoshones; and of the Cheyennes? valiant but doomed resistance against the army of the United States. In particular, Wooden Leg recalls the fight against Custer at the Little Bighorn, a controversial and arresting recollection that stands as the first published Native account of that battle. ø As an old man in his seventies, Wooden Leg related the story of his life and the Little Bighorn battle in interviews with Thomas B. Marquis (1869?1935), formerly an agency physician for the Northern Cheyennes. Marquis checked and corroborated or corrected all points of importance with other Cheyennes. This edition features a new introduction by Richard Littlebear, president of Chief Dull Knife College and an enrolled member of the Northern Cheyenne Nation of Montana.

“This is fantasy served with a twist of Monty Python, parody that works by never taking itself too seriously.” —Publishers Weekly Murder! Mahem! Bacon sandwiches! People are dying suspiciously in Ankh-Morpork, and Sam Vimes of the City Watch will find the truth. Another brilliant and hilarious Discworld adventure from beloved New York Times bestselling author Terry Pratchett For Commander Sam Vimes, Head of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch, life consists of trouble . . . and more trouble: a werewolf with pre-lunar tension, a dwarf with attitude, a golem who’s begun to think for itself. Now he’s got the unusual deaths of three elderly Ankh-Morporkians on his hands. It’s murder in Discworld!—which ordinarily is no big deal. The problem is, the deaths do not bear the clean, efficient marks of the Assassins' Guild; there’s an apparent lack of motive, and there’s no trace of anything alive having been at the crime scene. What Vimes does have are some tracks of white clay and more bothersome “clue” thingies that muck up his investigations. The anger of a fearful populace is already targeting the city’s small community of golems—those mindless, absurdly industrious creatures of baked clay, who can occasionally be found toiling in the city's factories. And certain highly placed personages are using the unrest as an excuse to resurrect a monarchy—which would be bad enough even if their would-be “king” wasn’t as empty-headed as your typical animated pottery. In addition to quieting the restless populace, Vimes has to find out whodunit—and howdunit too. He’s not even sure what they dun. But as soon as he knows what the questions are, he’s going to look for some answers. The Discworld novels can be read in any order, but Feet of Clay is the 3rd book in the City Watch collection and the 17th Discworld book. The City Watch collection in order: Guards! Guards! Men at Arms Feet of Clay Jingo The Fifth Element Night Watch Thud! Snuff

When a reader contacts local newspaper The Crow to report a rare sighting of the Boreal or so-called 'Funeral' owl, the paper's editor Philip Dryden has a sense of foreboding. For the Funeral Owl is said to be an omen of death. It's already proving to be one of the most eventful weeks in The Crow's history. The body of a Chinese man has been discovered hanging from a cross in a churchyard in Brimstone Hill in the West Fens. The inquest into the deaths of two tramps found in a flooded ditch has unearthed some shocking findings. A series of metal thefts is plaguing the area. And PC Stokely Powell has requested Dryden's help in solving a ten-year-old cold case: a series of violent art thefts culminating in a horrifying murder. As Dryden investigates, he uncovers some curious links between the seemingly unrelated cases: it would appear the sighting of the Funeral Owl is proving prophetic in more ways than one.

THE PERFECT GIFT FOR NATURE LOVERS ‘Dusk is filling the valley. It is the time of the gloaming, the owl-light. Out in the wood, the resident tawny has started calling, Hoo-hoo-hoo-h-o-o-o.’ There is something about owls. They feature in every major culture from the Stone Age onwards. They are creatures of the night, and thus of magic. They are the birds of ill-tidings, the avian messengers from the Other Side. But owls – with the sapient flatness of their faces, their big, round eyes, their paternal expressions – are also reassuringly familiar. We see them as wise, like Athena’s owl, and loyal, like Harry Potter's Hedwig. Human-like, in other words. No other species has so captivated us. In The Secret Life of the Owl, John Lewis-Stempel explores the legends and history of the owl. And in vivid, lyrical prose, he celebrates all the realities of this magnificent creature, whose natural powers are as fantastic as any myth. 'John Lewis-Stempel is one of the best nature writers of his generation' Country Life
