Few buildings capture the splendor of Portugal's royal past as well as the enchanting palace and gardens of Queluz. Designed by architect Jean Baptiste Robillion in the French Rococo style during the second half of the eighteenth century the palace and gardens quickly became the royal family's favorite summer residence. The book opens with a survey of the history and origins of the palace, and continues with a lavishly illustrated tour of the principal enfilade of rooms. Particular attention throughout is devoted to the architecture, the decoration and furnishings, all of which were carefully designed to create a sense of stylistic harmony. In studying the architecture and development of the formal gardens, this unique book highlights Robillion's other principal achievement at Queluz: his use of classical statues, lakes and fountains, and carefully contrived vistas to create a mythological route of discovery abounding with antique gods and heroes.

An Anthropology Of Ethics written by James D. Faubion and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-04-14 with Social Science categories.

Through an ambitious and critical revision of Michel Foucault's investigation of ethics, James Faubion develops an original program of empirical inquiry into the ethical domain. From an anthropological perspective, Faubion argues that Foucault's specification of the analytical parameters of this domain is the most productive point of departure in conceptualizing its distinctive features. He further argues that Foucault's framework is in need of substantial revision to be of genuinely anthropological scope. In making this revision, Faubion illustrates his program with two extended case studies: one of a Portuguese marquis and the other of a dual subject made up of the author and a millenarian prophetess. The result is a conceptual apparatus that is able to accommodate ethical pluralism and yield an account of the limits of ethical variation, providing a novel resolution of the problem of relativism that has haunted anthropological inquiry into ethics since its inception.

Gardens Of The Iberian Peninsula written by Nadja Horsch and has been published by Frank & Timme GmbH this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-11-22 with categories.

In garden research, Spanish and Portuguese green spaces are scarcely visible. This is a striking contrast not only to their diversity and quality but also to the global network of both countries, especially during the Early Modern period. To counterbalance this, specialists from Spain, Portugal and Germany gathered in 2021 on an international and interdisciplinary conference. In the Portuguese Palace of Queluz they discussed the fundamental issues of garden art on the Iberian Peninsula. Their contributions are collected in this book. They are proof of a cross-border transcultural approach, which has freed itself from national stereotypes. Also, it addresses insights which have been derived from the cultural interaction across the centuries and the different epochs of garden art.

5000 Years Of Tiles written by Hans Van Lemmen and has been published by Smithsonian Institution this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-22 with Design categories.

A comprehensive, full-color exploration of tile art and production worldwide, from earliest times to the present day. The book is both an authoritative work of reference and a visual delight, ranging from ancient Greece, where the first fired roof tiles date from as early as the third millennium BC, to twentieth-century Mexico. Along the way we encounter stunning examples of the tiler's art: the enormous English medieval floor pavements from Byland Abbey and Clarendon Palace; figural tiles from China, intended to adorn roofs and ward off evil; the famous Iznik tiles from the Islamic world, with their richly decorative patterns; the highly stylised ceramic tiles of the Arts and Crafts movement; and the tiles created by some of the finest ceramic artists and potters of the twenty-first century. Placing the tiles firmly in their historical and cultural context, the book highlights both continuity and diversity, the dissemination of techniques and designs, and how tile art in one time and place has inspired and rejuvenated those in others. Tiles are also studied in terms of function as well as form, and the full range of architectural and practical purposes for which they have been used - from floors to roofs, stoves to bathrooms, cathedrals to metro stations - will be explored, along with the various techniques employed to create such versatile pieces. 5000 Years of Tiles is the essential, most comprehensive single volume for anyone interested in the ceramic, decorative, and architectural arts.
